    In the Haryana region had developed many urban centres when Panini wrote his Sanskrit Grammar book. He in Astadhayi, has mentioned the following 9 town names from the region included in modern Haryana state:

    1. Sonaprastha : Modern Sonipat

    2. Roni : Modern Rodi in Hisar District.

    3.Kapisthala: Modern Kaithal.

    4.Sairisaka : Modern Sirsa

    5. Srughana: Ancient capital of the Punjab; Modern Sugh which covered the Area inhabited now by Jagadhri Town, Buria, Chaneti, Dayalgarh, Sugh and Amadlpur villages.

    6. Yugandhara : Modern Jagadhri.

    7. Gaudapura is perhaps old name of Gurgaon.

    8. Tausayana is modern Tohana, and

    9. Kalakuta was probably Kalaka in the Panchkula district.

    But it is surprising to note that in the list of these towns, Sthaneswar or Kurukshetra has found no mention !

    There is a very good book on the subject;
    Geography from Ancient Indian Coins & Seals By Parmanand Gupta

    http://books.google.com/books?id=LzH...adhari&f=false

    Book has 100s of old names of Indian cities.

    Maitrayani Samhita seems to have first of all mentioned the name of Kurukshetra as a region. [II. 1.4]

    But the precise geographical definition of the land may be found in Taitrtriya Aranyaka in which while describing the sacrifice being performed by gods with Kurukshetra as their altar, with Khandavaprastha made up southern half of this altar, Turghana [Srughana--Sugh] its northern half, Parinat the western half and Maru its rubbish pit. [VIII. I.I]

    But this description mentions only the spread of Kurukshetra region and no mention of specific town later designated as 'Kurukshetra' is mentioned in these two books too.

    In the area covered by present Haryana state over 1100 ancient sites of archaeological importance have been identified by the scholars. If the data collected from these sites is properly documented and interpreted it is likely to solve many a contentious and missing points in Indian History.
