Haryana region's antiquity and contribution in the evolution of Indian culture and civilisation through the ages has never been questioned but its nomenclature has continued to change from time to time. During prehistoric and protohistoric times it was known variously as Uttarvedi, Brahamvedi, Bramvarta, Brahamrisidesa, Kurudesa, Kurujungala, Bahudhanayaka and so on.
The Skandapurana mentions the region as Hariala and Palam Baoli inscription of AD 1280 describes it as Hariyanka. The Delhi Inscription of AD 1328 reads : There is a region called Haryana which is like a heaven on earth.
