    Haryana Through the Ages

Haryana region's antiquity and contribution in the evolution of Indian culture and civilisation through the ages has never been questioned but its nomenclature has continued to change from time to time. During prehistoric and protohistoric times it was known variously as Uttarvedi, Brahamvedi, Bramvarta, Brahamrisidesa, Kurudesa, Kurujungala, Bahudhanayaka and so on.

The Skandapurana mentions the region as Hariala and Palam Baoli inscription of AD 1280 describes it as Hariyanka. The Delhi Inscription of AD 1328 reads : There is a region called Haryana which is like a heaven on earth.

The purpose of the thread is to discuss the contribution of the people of the region towards the maintenance of freedom of the country against the foreign invaders and enrichment of indian cultural milieu through the ages.

The readers are requested to contribute their reasoned views on the topic.

    Bhiwani, July 1
It is the first and one of the rare of the rarest rock painting with an inscription that has been discovered from Tosham Hills in Haryana.

Dr Rajesh Kumar Srivastava, Assistant Director, Archives, Hisar, who retired from service on June 30, discovered these rock paintings on April 3.
Speaking to The Tribune, Dr Srivastava said that he visited the Tosham Hills to photograph and document rock inscriptions, holy reservoirs in small caverns, caves, temples and ancient monuments situated there.
While locating the rock inscription on the hill with the help of local people, he discovered a rock cut in oval shape, remotely situated about 40 feet lower down the hill.
This rock has two separate inscriptions, the upper one is in the middle sized: about 2 inches letters and the lower one which is rather roughly cut is in large: 2.5 to 3.5 inches letters.
While observing the rock inscription, he surprisingly found a gigantic figure in orange colour with a big open mouth engraved on it.
On a closure look, it could be recognised as a "terrible lizard", commonly called as a dinosaur.
"This rock painting of a dinosaur is fascinating because it can tell us so much about the life, colour and existence of the dinosaurs in India. It has been observed that most of the dinosaurs are portrayed in grey or green colour skin. It is not clear as to how their skin looked like — was it green, blue, or orange? However, this rock painting of a dinosaur will certainly prove fruitful to the researchers and archaeologists to decipher the size, colour and exact appearance of dinosaurs in India," Srivastava said.
The discovery of a dinosaur painting on Tosham Hill's rocks will bring the town of Tosham in the world's heritage sites and will attract research scholars from all across India and overseas, he said.
Thereafter, he noticed the image of two men, a saint, woman and children engraved on the same rock. It also portrays the existence of various types of wild and pet animals and their friendly behaviour with the environment.
Dr Srivastava says this rock-shelter painting is of a royal ruling family of that period. It looks like a modern painting, depicting all the contemporary living creatures on the earth. The condition of the painting is not good enough.
He said the Archaeological Survey of India in coordination with the State Archaeology Department, Haryana, must take over the site to protect it and develop it as a heritage tourist spot.

    contd...from previous page post.

The discovery of a rock painting is certainly a landmark in the history of Tosham town, he said.
Besides, there are several holy places on Tosham Hill, namely Sidh Baba Shri Mungipa temple, Panch Teerth temple, Pandu Teerth Kund, Surya Kund, Kukkar Kund, Gyarasia/Vyas Kund and a reservoir or a small tank on the summit of the hill to store rain water. There are also remains of a fort wall in the ruined condition present on top of the hill.
The Tosham rock painting with an inscription is a record documenting the establishment of a monastery and the building of water tanks for the followers of Satvata religion. Dr Srivastava said though the rock painting was not dated but could be assigned to the early fifth circa era.

Historic town of Kurukshetra [older site Sthaneswar or Thanesar] contains so many Hindu religious places of worship. In addition, relics of ancient Buddhist Stupas near the Kurukshetra University and then Sheikh Chehli's Maqbara, followed by Tenth Patshahi Gurdwara lend the place an all religious enchantment to the visitors.

Ancient type of education mixed with modernity at Shri Jairam Gurukul and the latest modern education at Kurukshetra University and a large number of smaller and bigger institutions give Kuruksehtra a place on the educational place of note on the map of India.

In fact the place represents antiquity and modernity in equal measures !

The world over 'consummerism culture' is on the rise and Haryana cannot stand aloof to the changes that are taking place. So when we are in the midst of switching over from the traditional to 'modern way of life', the changes seem to be end of the road. But there is silver lining in every cloud and all is not destined to be doomed as we have strong cultural roots to stand upon. I am an optimistic and believe that Haryana and India will emerge winners in the long run as Alma Iqbal has said like this:

    Misar Yunan mit gaye .....
    Sadiyon dor raha duman ka,
    Kuchh baat hai kee
    mitaye
    mitati nahin hasti hamari !

    Harappan-era skeletons found:

Four human skeletons, believed to be 5,000 years old, have been found by archaeologists from the site of Harappan civilisation at Rakhi Garhi village near Hisar.

Archaeologists of Haryana Archaeology Department in collaboration with Seoul National University, South Korea and Deccan College, Pune recently found four human skeletons at the site. Prof. Nilesh Yadav, co-director of the project, said this is the first time that skeletons have been recovered during the excavation in the village, which is 60 km from Hisar district. The excavation in the village started in 2012.

These skeletons are of two men, one woman and a child. The height of the skeletons of the men is five feet and six inches and both were aged about 50 years while the height of the skeleton of the woman is five feet and four inches and was aged around 30 years. The child's age was believed to be around 10 years.

These skeletons will be sent to laboratory for DNA test, Yadav said. Besides pottery with grains of food, bangles, toys, mini wheels and sling balls of different sizes have also been recovered from the excavation site. Archaeologists also recovered a seal which has some tiger-like figure inscribed on it. They believe that it was used in trade or for some other purposes. Tools which could have been used for fishing and hunting purposes have also been recovered. The excavation work was spread over an area of 50 acres and the archaeologists are still working on three mounds numbering 4, 6 and 7.

Haryana's Harappa saluted women 5,000 years agoCHANDIGARH: Given its skewed sex ratio and long list of repressive khap diktats, it is difficult to imagine Haryana as a place which put women on a higher pedestal than men. But when the Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) dug up the Harappan Rakhigarhi site in Hisar, they found in the 5,500-year-old ruins a lifestyle that today's women activists would have been proud of. The ASI report based on excavations between 1997 and 2003 has pointed out that "female deceased were offered more than double number of earthen wares as compared to opposite sex at the burials found at the Rakhigarhi site". "Apart from this, to show reverence, the female deceased were invariably offered wares like dish-on-stand, bowl-onstand, beaker and medium sized vases, denoting their status over and above male counterpart" the 396-page report says. The report was submitted by retired DG (archaeology) Dr Amarendra Nath in December last year after 12 years of extensive research. At least 12 skeletons were found during that period and five more have been found last week during an ongoing separate research by Deccan College, Pune. The report also cites size of bangles, found inside burials, to support the fact that women faced no discrimination at that time while doing heavy work at home or outside. "Also, some wide heavy bangles found at different sites show battering marks on them. That means that heavy manual work was also part of the work of these particular women," the report added. It said that these type of wide shell bangles were never found in any other burials at any Harappan site so far in Asia. A part of the report also dwells upon the "robust build of a female".
