They are not homogeneous tribe but many writers have identified them as the Jats who were displaced at various points of time from their original home !
History is best when created, better when re-constructed and worst when invented.

According to genetic studies they are connected with Dalits of NW India. Probably Dom and Banjara like nomads.

As Dr. Rajpal stated that they are not homogeneous tribes and that is true to large extent. If u study more about the so called Roma and other migrating tribes, you will find several nomadic tribes moving in the same direction of migration within a span of few hundred years.

Now there are two points to consider:

    1. Do the "Dalits", as u use this word, also not write same family/clan names as Jats and other north western people?
    2. Some people say that there is a religious view to their migration which states that Romas/Dom/Banjaras migrated due to extremities created by prevailing religion at their point of migration from North West Bharat.

NW tribal groups like Banjara,Dom,etc are more similar to central-Indians.

Most of Indian writers does not know anything about JATS or they are anti Jats , their only perception is that those who live in Junglee manner are the JATS. They always correlate all these to JATS, While JATS are one of the civilized Community in India. Not marrying in same village is the Symbol of High level of civilization.

Most upper caste Indian writers are literally hostile to everything which does not belong to them. Word Malecha for foreigners and Dasyu for lower caste is demonstration of this.
