Did Aurangzeb give Grants to Hindu Temple/s

One more news has broken that Aurangzeb gave land and grants to Hindu Temples. Read the Extract of the news from link ---http://go4g.airtel.in/nd/?pid=587265

    :

In sharp contrast to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's image of a temple destroyer in history books, an Allahabad-based historian has claimed that he had offered lavish grants and land to the ancient Someshwar Mahadev temple on the banks of Sangam in Arail.

Historian and principal of Serveshwari Degree College Pradeep Kesherwani made this claim based on certain historical facts. "During one of his military campaigns, Aurangzeb and his army had spent time near the temple. During the stay, he not only visited the temple but also offered grant and land for its maintenance. This fact is mentioned on the 'Dharma Dand' (religious pillar) situated on the temple premises," Kesherwani told TOI.

Without contradicting the examples quoted by some historians to show that Aurangzeb gave grants to a few

temples it stands out glaringly that he was largely responsible for the demolition of numberless temples in

,several places, especially in Gujrat. Zajia was not a welfare measure. His economic policy visa vis the Hindus

was discriminatory. He was well read but failed to understand the true message of Islam. He limited it to

conversion. How one would be evaluated as a human being if he does not hesitate to imprison his father and

to put to death his own noble brother if seen as a contender the thrown. He did not do any thing glorifying

either to true Islam or the Mughal empire or to the neighbourhood where the British assigned his name to a

Road. The way he slaughter an adversary like Gokula and his surviving family even the angels in heaven m

ust have wept. Even at the risk of being bracketed with the Hindutva votaries, I would not think the action of

the NDMC in replacing his name with that of Dr. Kalam a true Muslim and a true humanist was not right.

Right from his accession to the end of life Aurangzeb's about 50 years' reign presents an unresolvable riddle/puzzle before the evaluators of his life and work. On the one hand there is a lot of literary evidence to show that he ordered demolition of temples and religious shrines whereas there are shreds of information to show that he gave monetary assistance and land grants to non islamic religious places as well.

He abolished many a non islamic actions like Jharokha darshan, writing of kalima on coins, celebrations of Nauroz festival at the court and so on; on the other side he imposed discriminatory customs duty on Hindu traders, imposed much hated Zejia on non-muslims and disallowed conversion of muslims to the religion of their choice. To war prisoners he gave choice of either accept Islam or be ready to be slaughtered.

His empire was the largest one among the Mughals but seeds of rise of fissiparous forces had already been sprouted as is witnessed in the form of revolts of Satnamis, Jats, Sikhs, Rajputs, Marathas and deccan sultans.

Thus he presents a very important period of Indian history for researchers with lot of interest and value to general history of India and the world as such.

    Aurangzeb is back!!!

    AURANGZEB IS BACK!!!
Have anyone tried to rationally unexplore the rein of Aurangzeb or just flowing with the tide, like a dead in the river?? I believe we should not be judgemental about anyone be it Aurangzeb or Pakistan or Taliban or US or “our” PM. I am trying to create precise history relating Aurangzeb with the ancient and the contemporary times, hope you will appreciate.

Aurangzeb imprisoned his father to get throne; AMBISARA(ruler of Taxila) TOO KILLED HIS FATHER TO USURP THRONE.
Aurangzeb killed his brothers for the throne; SIMILARLY, ASHOKA-THE GREAT, KILLED HIS 99 BROTHER FOR THE SAME REASON.

Now question arises WHY HE IMPOSED JAZIYA(tax on basically those Hindus who did not contribute in the state’s military or administration) after 20years of his becoming emperor??
It is because due to numerous war and expedition state’s revenue depleted sharply and need resources anyhow like govt. these days have surcharge, octroi, etc etc. Recently, govt. add service tax for those using chopper for visiting MATA VAISHNO DEVI, Is it a sort of Jayiza?? :P
Apart from Jaziya there was a mandatory tax only on MUSLIMS as well like ZAKAT, unfortunately “so called” intellectuals don’t talk about it.
WHY HE WAS INDIFFERENT TO HINDUS??
It was impossible for Aurangzeb to win over his talented and liberal brother, DARA SHIKHO, without the active help of orthodox section of Muslim Ulemas and saints. Therefore, he had taken some to please them.
If you see contemporary politics as well, one of the reason for decisive victory of BJP in the general election, was the active support of RSS. Now, BJPwalas are scratching the back of RSS- preference of Sanskrit over German(Sanskritization of Nation), Ban on beef( Even though there are many supporters of beef ban here but can anyone tell me what ppl do with their new-born bull???? ), etc.
Also can anyone wondered why there is/was a communal riots before any major elections, be it in Delhi recently or in Muzzafarnagar before general election. Also, No wonder if there will be some communal violence in Bihar these days.
    Lets consider,why he DEMOLISHED TEMPLES.
Does he the only one who did so??? No Hindu ruler ever plundered temples for wealth??? Are you sure?? Here are some facts-
    >1089-1101 AD: King Harsha of Kashmir of the first Lohara dynasty indulged in ruthlessly looting the treasures of the temples of Bhimasai and also systematically confiscated and defiled the metallic statues of Gods by outcasts throughout the Kashmir valley in order to obtain the valuable material. He even imposed tax on the night soil.
    >Rashtrakuta king Indira III not only destroyed the temple of Kalapriya at Kalpa near the Jamuna river, patronized by their deadly enemies, the Pratiharas, but they took special delight in recording the fact. Also there are numerous such examples.

Temples were the source of wealth and those who need money plundered temples be it Hindu or Muslims, don’t be sentimental appreciate the truth.

There is a FORMULA to judge the history- be it ancient, medieval, world wars, talibanism, US attack on Vientam, Afghanistan etc, ISIS, Kashmir Issue etc etc
    EMPIRE=ECONOMY
Without economy(money) there is no empire(kingdom) and there is saying in Harvanvi- “Raj aur khaj k maze e nyaree howe hai”
If you see there were continuous battle fought in order to access ports in west India in order to control the trade routes, which provides finance to empire.
There is same formula for mostly contemporary issues and countries will go any extent to achieve them. AMERICA, so called “killer machine” is the latest example.

Finally, there are some radical and fundamental elements in our society which tries to polarize the issues for their short term gains, neglecting their impact on the unity of our beloved INDIA in the long run. Such ppl trying to silence the intellectual voices. Promoting non sensible myths like “Taj mahal was once a Shiv temple”. Raise awareness and serve humanity and NATION.

    JAI HIND!!!

He had everything at his disposal to go down in history as the greatest of the rulers India has known. The emperor Aurangzeb was a man of high intellectual powers, a brilliant writer, as his letters prove, an astute diplomatist, a soldier of undaunted courage, a skilled administrator and merciful judge.

But all these qualities in him were overshadowed by his lust for capturing and maintaining unlimited power in his hands having trust in none except himself. He killed everyone who came in his way first to come to power as an emperor of India and then to keep his hold on the power ! None was spared who raised a voice and thus gave signal for local people to rise under local leaders. Though with an iron hand he crushed the fissiparous powers but this proved a very costly affair and dismemberment and dissemination of the empire soon followed when there was no strong mughal ruler from the dynasty founded by Babur.

So long as Shahjahan, the father of Aurangzeb was alive, the latter being usurper of the Empire, showed himself to be hardcore fanatic follower of sunni Islam. He reimposed Pilgrim toll and Jazia on non-Muslims, stopped Kalama writing on currency, ordered not to construct new Hindu temples and also not to get repaired old ones. By one stroke of pen he ordered toll free business for Muslims and removed all Hindu revenue officials. Music was banned in the Court. Public celebration of Hindu festivals like Diwali and Holi were prohibited and so on.

But some of the steps had adverse effect on the government exchequer too. due to unavailability of trained Muslims to fill the vacancies had to relent and allowed Hindus to rejoin their posts in revenue department. Likewise, taking advantage of the toll free business concession all businessmen got together and started to take their consignments in the name of muslim traders - so 2.5% toll tax was imposed on the Muslims and 5.0% on Hindus.

These and some other steps made Aurangzeb villain in the eyes of public.

    Not a big surprise !

Mohammad Gouri and Mahmood Gajni are also considered as great kings there. Even they named their missiles as Gouri and Gajni.

That's pretty symbolic to their mindset as well as intentions.

    My take on the subject;

There will always be people who will shower praise on Aurangzeb. People by nature have selective vision/ mind. Even today there are many people who will say that Ravan was not a bad person or Fullan devi and all other dacoits were good people. Even Veerapan is worshiped by many villagers. History is as good as the historian who writes it. Honestly who cares whether he was great or not. What matters most is the direction in which today's India is moving. People say that Aurangzeb gave grants to temples. Might be true or might not be. Even if he gave, he must have had some solid political reason and not the love for temple or Hindus.

    Friend,

It would be good if you could further elaborate the phrase : "What matters most is the direction in which today's India is moving."

    My major worries are;

    1. Most Indians are not law abiding. They think that lawlessness is a sign of strength.
    2. most Indians want things out of turn. This is manifesting in wanting job reservations, chaotic driving on roads, dynasty politics etc.
    3. Most Indians don't like to be questioned for their bad behavior.

Sorry to say, this trend is increasing at every level. In my view this is bringing India down. I care most for this and not Aurrangzeb, beef and temples.

Totally in agreement on three points pointed out by you.

But how this thread on historical documents' discussion is bringing India down, may be shared please.

Aurangzeb also put a ban on history writing in his court and the results are there to be seen by everyone. Here you seem to suggest the same thing though indirectly by urging not to discuss historic events and persons like Aurangzeb.

Study of past is must to properly understand the current phase of events and it also helps in facing future course of events in right perspective. Isn't it so !!

    Thanks.
