The Times of India report says:

"And how was this dating done? "Considerable research" and a software procured for around Rs 7,000 from the US were the keys apparently. "Planetary information" from the Rig Veda, Ramayana and Mahabharata was used to find the exact dates, said Saroj Bala, director of the institute. Hosted at Delhi's Lalit Kala Akademi, the institute's 'findings' have been submitted to the Union culture ministry."

Would it not be in fitness of things if Saroj Bala published her research in some standard research journal so that historians and other scientists including social scientists could assess her valuable research before submitting it to the culture ministry ! If she has done so already she must share the name of publication so that others could carry forward the 'good break' given by her to epic chronology.

    Cyber criminals challenge to India

India is fast becoming a "strategic target" for cyber-criminals with an estimated 38 per cent of organisations exposed to targeted attacks in the first half of 2015, a report said.Security solutions firm FireEye's '1H 2015 Regional Advanced Threat Report for Asia Pacific' found that 38 per cent of organisations in India were exposed to targeted advanced persistent attacks in the first half of the year, a 23 per cent increase from the previous year."India is fast becoming a strategic target, in part because of the potentially sensitive information that is expected to be digitised through ambitious and high-profile projects such as Digital India," it said. The focus on the country is reflected in the report that ranks India fourth in Asia-Pacific countries exhibiting the most command-and-control (CnC) infection callbacks. This indicates the presence of compromised systems that are actively communicating with the advanced persistent threat (APT) groups' command-and-control infrastructure."As India embarks on ambitious technology projects, attackers are exploiting gaps to compromise critical networks. Indian organisations are more likely to be exposed to attacks than the global average," FireEye Chief Technology Officer (APAC) Bryce Boland said.

    Nobel recognition

Combining ancient knowledge with modern science

Some extracts from the news :

    ''
MALARIA infects 20 crore people worldwide every year. There is no effective vaccine, so therapies based on the drug Artemisinin are the first line of treatment. There was a time when malaria used to be treated with chloroquine or quinine. The easy availability of the drug led to a significant drop in death rates, but its widespread use meant strains of malaria became resistant. That’s when scientist Tu Youyou turned to ancient Chinese herbal remedies for answers. She found Artemisinin in the 1970s under a Chinese army project to zero in on a plant whose properties could help fight malaria. Tu is among the three scientists to have won the Nobel Prize for medicine for discovering ways to fight malaria and roundworm parasite infections.

Her recognition is bound to bring the focus back on the potential of herbal medicine in India. Despite a new interest generated in in recent years, it has remained a neglected subject in the country. "......

India has rich heritage of natural medications and medicines and has abundance of natural resources used for manufacture of medicines. Taking a cue from the above recognition by UN, Indians should also try to harness indigenous material and methods to give new life to the fast dying natural biodiversity !

Web based Initiative to control Malaria

The use of IT to develop web to tract and control malaria has arrived. Read the following news item :

In what is projected as a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Mangaluru City Corporation will officially unveil its IT-based initiative to track and control malaria cases on October 17.

The initiative would be through software developed under a public-private partnership. The software has a web-based system for clinics and laboratories, a mobile-based system for field workers or multi-purpose health workers, and another web-based system for the city corporation. The software connects the field workers (who visit households and report sources of malaria and malaria cases), clinics and laboratories (which are supposed to report to the civic body when a malaria case is diagnosed) and the officials in city corporation.

    ......

The software would now give city planners, including officials and elected representatives, a bird’s eye view of instances of outbreak of malaria and follow-up action on the ground.

On 'WHO IS HINDU' appeared a news story in today's news scoop that has very wide dimension and great influence on the polity and society of India. The full news is reproduced with due acknowledgement of the source [http://go4g.airtel.in/nd/?pid=681740] as below :

Indore, Oct 11: Union Home Ministry does not know the definition of the word 'Hindu'.

In reply to an RTI query by Neemuch resident Chandrashekhar Gaur, the ministry said it does not know the definition of the word Hindu.

"To my query under RTI about the meaning and definition of the word Hindu in the light of the Indian Constitution and the law, the Home Ministry in its reply on July 31 said the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) doesn't have information regarding it," said Gaur, a resident of Neemuch district in Madhya Pradesh.

Gaur had also sought to know on what grounds a community was considered Hindu, and why Hindus were considered to be a majority community. The government's reply was baffling, he said.

"If the government doesn't know the meaning and definition of the word Hindu, on what basis did it enact the Hindu Marriage Act?" he questioned.

Doctors, who were present in the mortuary of Sion Hospital in Mumbai, got scared when a dead man started breathing suddenly. The man, who was believed to be dead, was lucky enough as he regained consciousness minutes before postmortem.

The doctors were preparing for the postmortem when they noticed the "dead man" moving. The incident took place in the hospital in Mumbai on Sunday, Oct 11.

The man has been identified as 50-year-old Prakash who was found in a bus stop. Police brought his body and insisted that he was dead. Doctors claimed that his pulse and heartbeat were missing when he was brought to the hospital.

A senior official of the hospital was quoted as saying, "The patient was on a stretcher and his face and ear was infested with maggots. The patient also had fixed dilated pupils, a condition common in patients who are close to death. This could have led the doctor to believe that the patient was dead."
The hospital authorities have begun an investigation into the case. They also said that they would come up with some protocol to avoid such kind of incidents in future.
