    A Tribute to Mother

Dear, beloved ma... (February 11, 1994)

Sitting each day by your bedside,
I see your frail body so helplessly lie.
Fighting and gasping for every single breath,
You relentlessly struggle to elude the claws of death.
For one who just the other day was up and around,
You seem to have lost all the zeal abound.

Your eyes are weary, and laden with pain,
Your heart is aching and wandering in vain.
You gaze at the ceiling knowing not your ails,
    Gratefully acknowledging life's adventurous sails.
Worldly attachments still clutching so high,
You converse with Almighty through your only sigh.

Unable to control your weary emotions,
Tears of sorrow reflect your devotions.
You say you have been lucky all your life,
For all you ever wanted was for us all to shine.
You seem to have made peace with the days gone by,
But the silent spectator knows the pain you hide.

Failing to believe, that this same person,
Was the one who once made me into a person?
You are the one who once took care of my needs,
Treading the crossroads, and guarding my deeds.
You held my hand when I could barely walk,
You were my voice when I couldn' even talk.

As you lie there so helpless and frail,
A part of me dies watching you not able to inhale.
If you are so divine as to give me life,
How can you now not cling to your own life?
Some things you said and the things you didn't..
Some so bold, others with no apparent hint.

You once told me this world will go on,
Even if someone dear couldn't come along.
You said life is like a day with sunlight so bright,
But death is certain as the shadow of the night.
Of all the things that can't be cured,
One must be brave, so they are endured.
What has beginning, must come to an end,
This is the eternal truth, we must all understand.

Ever so gently, ever so kind,
I squeezed your lifeless hand in mine.
    Although cold, clammy and fragile,
Yet I could feel the warmth left behind.
You never said a word, just looked around,
Sure enough I could read all that was on your mind.
Oh dear mother, oh creator of my life,
Why so painful is this final good bye...
In my heart you shall always survive,
Until such time that in heaven we reunite...

    Dear Shahshi,
Thank you for this deeply touching tribute to a truly special Jat mother. Thank you also for reinforcing our faith in reincarnation for havent we just met your mother in your lines. She lives for all of us in you, in your words we can see her and truly we like what we see.

    Dear Amit:

Thank you for the kind words. Although, I had written these lines, 8 years ago, at her deathbed, it is your recent poem (about transition from the village) that gave me the inspiration to scribble these on this site.

You are absolutely right. Indeed this Jat woman was very special, and deserved a special tribute on the Jatland. While it was my father who I would go crying to, for every little conern, my mother was the one who truly shaped my life, and was responsible for my transition from the village. Although a strict disciplinarian, she single-handedly defied all myths about gender inequality. And, while she never attended a school herself (oldest of 4 sisters), she was a true visionary about education, and could give you a full account of any religious doctrine or epic, including, Ramayan, Geeta, Mahabharat or the vedic scrpitures. Her highly religious upbringing (in village Ismaila -- as in Sampla-Samaal, near Rohtak) had a lot to do with her broader attitude.

However, while her memory remains larger than life in my heart, every Jat mother is worthy of special honor for all the sacrifices she makes in shaping the future of her children.

Keep up the good work with the inspiraional poetry....

    best wishes,

    Shashi

Very touching and reminds a lot of people what a mother is. There is no love purer than that of mother those who are lucky to have them around should appreciate them .

    Dear Shashi,

It was a very touching tribute to a proud Mother. She was a very lucky Mother who got such a talented and loving daughter like you. I wish, I could have seen your Mother.

    Sujata ji,
though everyone is supposed to be very close to his/her mother, but no one might have described her the way u have . No one in this world can ever replace one's mother. She is an ultimate source of energy that drives anyone around with the strength hard to realise. I can never ever imagine how my mother could bear the pain of losing her mother at an age of 8, she has been all alone throughout her life, i m searching my mother's state of mind ,in the meaningful words between ur lines. Hats off to u, ur mother and every mother on this earth.

Sachin, thanks a lot for your kind words. I don’t think we can ever really pay the debt owed to our parents. A mother's love especially is so strong and unyielding that it endures all circumstances, good fortune and misfortune, prosperity and privation, honor and disgrace - a mother's love perceives no impossibilities. What stood out throughout my childhood and youth years was my mother’s steadfast and divine love. Not only did she surround me with comfort and anticipate my wants, she resolutely held me to the highest standards, and was never content with anything less than giving me the best.

However, I would never have realized her love justifiably enough until I myself became a mother. One day I want my children to realize how much I loved them, when they explore the attic - and find every note they ever wrote to me, every finger painting, clay pots, bead necklace, Easter bunny, cardboard Santa Claus, paperlace Mother's Day card and school report since day one!

Please know that your mother may not have known the true love of a mother as she lost her so early in life, but she made sure to give you all she had!

    Cheers!
