    Top 200 universities in World

India has only one entry in the top 200 universities of the world (see attached file). This certainly reflects the dearth of quality higher education institutes in India. Government should put more money into RnD and try to reduce the institutional corruption in most of the big indian universities. Any thoughts from other members?

What is the parameter to decide who is first who is second. In my opinion these are the best universities of the world.

    Maharishi Dayanad University, Rohtak.
    Panjab University, Chandigarh.
    Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.
    Delhi University, Delhi.
    University of Bombay, Bombay.
    Indian Institute of Technology.

MD University Rohtak is famous for foreign student. A lot of foreign student from different countries had been passed the university degrees from this university during last 25 years.

Phougat Bhaisahab..aapne ekdum sahi kahan..India has one of the best universities but compared to other top universities in the world they come out wanting in several key aspects like research facilities and infrastructure. Obviously the universities of india are themselves a reflection of indian standards and india's will to provide quality education. More details of the report are available on this site.

Its a survey by an independent group based in britain. The validity of this survey is open to any questions and the results might be biased. I just provided this information as a reference to compare our universities to other universities and contemplate the ways to improve the general standard of higher education in India.

    My Dear All,

All world countries are inviting Indian software engineers. When we don't have these facilities then why are they inviting our qualified people? Our universities are best in the world. Of course everywhere there is a need of improvement. Ok my wife passed, B.A, M.A, B.Ed from M.D University, Rohtak. Rightnow she is teacher in (North America) Toronto District School Board. Wo goron ko padhati hai. Private company in India should do some survey and tell the world about our universities. But in real sense, these survey company are financed by universities so that people can come there for education. In North America, Europe, Australia there are not universities, there are shops to earn money. India is providing top class education on dearer rates.

    Cheers

    Dear Mr. Bamal,

Wishing you a very happy new year.

You have done a great job. But I dont agree that the Indian Universities lag behind in R & D and Research work. I fully agree with Mr. Phougat that these universities which are listed in your attachment would have paid for. The Survey company which has carried out this survey will have to be asked for:

    What is the basis viz.

    - Infrastructure of the University & that of the Surveying company
    - Type of R & D Facilities
    - which Universities they have visited
    - Point Rewarding System
    - Qualification, Experience & Level of the Surveyor
    - Reputation & the sanctity of the Surveying company

I have gone thru the List of the Institutes. Only IIT finds the place. Here I would like to ask the Surveyor that whether he is taking all the Six IITs as one University or taking separatly. If taking separatly then which IIT he is talking of? If taking One Institute, he iteself is wrong. Hence proved.....

Secondly, I would like to mention The ISc (Institute of Science), Bangalore. This college is ranked as 11th in world for its R & D Facilities and research work beside other facilities. All the Professors are working on the prestigious Projects of the world & the Pass out need not to introduce themselves.

I believe you will agree with my thgis point of view & wait for your comments.

In this world even George Bush is also labor. Ask him, if is he not public servant? Think thousand time before write. Why American economy is going down, why Indian economy is going up. All people are not like you. Gam ka ek anpadh aadmi bhi aapne sheet ko khatta nahi batata. Ravana ki haar ka karan, ghar ka bhedi lanka dhai. India ko bhi bahar se kum aur aandar ke jaichando se jyaga khatra hai.

only 3 entries in top 500:
    IISc
    IIT-Kharagpur
    Univ Calcutta.

The problems with higher education is that the quality of "lower" education is really "low" and the system has not changed much from what the britishers put in place. their aim was to generate complaint employes for the raj and not real education and that what we are still doing now for the brown sahibs.

    Dear Mr. Malik,

Thank you for your best wishes. I wish you all the best for 2005. All the ranking crieterias and details are mentioned in the report. The surveyor acknowledges that IIT has 7 campuses in India and so in a way india has 7 entries in top 50. But apart from IITs, IISc, IIMs and AIIMS how many other universities/institutions are up to the mark. IITs and IIMs have limited intake (1-2% of total candidates) and they are out of reach for most of higher education aspirants. The indian government spends a miniscule part of GDP on Research and development. Compare that to european countries or USA and you'll know how much higher education is valued in India. Anyway we can some comfort from the fact that none of any african countries or big countries like brazil and indonesia have any entry in top 200 ;-).

    Regards,
    Mandeep

Between 1980 to 2000, the number of scientific papers from India, indexed in the Science Citation Index, fell from 14,987 to 12,127. China's grew from 924 to 22,061.

    * A recent much accepted top 500 ranking of world universities features only three Indian universities - one in the 251 to 300 rank slot and the other two in the 451 to 500 slot.

    * Among the 149 top countries in science and technology, India ranks 119 when it comes to number of citations per scientific paper.

BANGALORE: While a debate has raged in scientific circles over the past few years on India's scientific prowess - vis-a-vis the rest of the world, there is now an almost universal acceptance that a rot has set in.

Academic ranking of top 500 world universities

In terms of interest in science, investment, institutes, number of scientists, scientific papers and their quality, Indian science is on the decline, say experts.

"There is very little doubt now that science in India has not kept pace with its competition. While countries like China and Brazil are galloping ahead we are far behind,''says the director of the Indian Institute of Science Prof Goverdhan Mehta.

"The fact, however bitter, is that India's contribution to science has come down enormously. We are not comparing ourselves to the US or Japan anymore, but to China and South Korea," says eminent scientist Prof C N R Rao.

Areas like physics, chemistry are seeing hardly two hundred papers emerging from India per annum, he says. "Take my area of chemistry, China used to contribute 3 per cent of chemistry papers a few years ago. Today, it contributes 10 per cent. India used to contribute 8-10 per cent, but today it contributes only 2.5 per cent," Prof Rao points out.

"A grossly sub-critical effort is responsible for our under achievement as seen in our share of global research and development output, which is only 1.58 per cent," says scientist-in-charge of the Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (C-MMACS), Dr Gangan Prathap.

While funding for research has increased marginally in recent times, the decline in the university system - with research shifting to specialised agencies, and the lack of support systems to match the changing face of science, are obvious reasons for decline, says Prof Mehta.

Incidentally, the `academic ranking of world universities 2003 is among the most recent indicators of the health of Indian research.

The Indian Institute of Science figures as India's highest representative in the ranking at 251 to 300, while IIT, Delhi and Kharagpur figure between 451 to 500. "There should be at least 100 world class universities in India itself," says Prof C N R Rao.

To keep pace with the developed world, India has to step up the number of research and development workers by a factor of 12 and increase scientific effort 50-fold, says Dr Prathap.

Judicious employment of people, making science more attractive monetarily and a pride in doing research for the country are crucial ingredients for growth of science in India, says Prof Rao.

"Stronger science and technology capacity in developing nations is not a luxury but an absolute necessity to participate in the world's fast forming, knowledge-based economy," states the recent report "Inventing a better future" from the international science advisory - the Inter-Academy Council - co chaired by Prof Goverdhan Mehta.

Importance of Indan Education in the world

US to increase H1B visas for Indian professionals

New Delhi, Jan. 6 (PTI): The US has said outsourcing to India was "unavoidable" as the latter had earned its place as the world's knowledge capital in the BPO sector and that it was actively considering increasing the H1B visas for Indian workers.

"Several appeals were made by the US citizens to put a stop to outsourcing to India but were outright rejected as the US felt that outsourcing to India, the knowledge capital of the world in the BPO sector, was unavoidable," an Assocham statement said here, quoting US Deputy Chief of Mission Robert O Blake.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the industry body, he said the US was now thinking about increasing the number of H1B visas to Indian professionals.

"This decision is based on the fact that the US recognises India's contribution in the fields like accounts, software, engineering and law," he said.

Inviting closer cooperation between the small and medium sized companies of the US and India, he said, "Such technological advancements will be of great use to Indian small-scale sector."

He said the fact that the US was sending several senators to India next week proves that the country was serious in boosting economic cooperation with India.

"This will give India an opportunity to showcase itself to an important legislative arm of the US Government," he said.

India's imports from the US stood at five billion dollars in 2003 while the exports to the US were valued at over 13 billion dollars, it added.

    Thumbs up thanks

Bamal ji u did really good job for jat bhai who r planning to apply to US universities for having a look on the ranking of the universities. Thankyou!
Its better if any body can provide ranking on the basis of subject and/or specialisation since u know this overall ranking is OK but sometimes universities famous or say ranked higher for some particular spacialisation counts more.

This ranking might be the least accepted ranking anywhere in the world. It was compiled by a chinese university and it explains why 16 chinese universities are in top 500. Also the ranking methodology gives too much emphasis on individual awards and performance. Peer opinion, student quality, selection procedure and course contents are not even considerd. Times higher education supplement ranking is more balanced and thus much more acceptable. This is my personal view!!

    Ranking Criteria and Weights

    Ranking Criteria and Weights

We rank universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, articles published in Nature and Science, articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index, and academic performance with respect to the size of an institution.

For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. The distribution of data for each indicator is examined for any significant distorting effect; standard statistical techniques are used to adjust the indicator if necessary.

Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown below to arrive at a final overall score for an institution. The highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. The scores are then placed in descending order. An institution's rank reflects the number of institutions that sit above it.

    Criteria Indicator Code Weight

Quality of Education Alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals Alumni 10%
Quality of Faculty Staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals Award 20%
Highly cited researchers in 21 broad subject categories HiCi 20%
Research Output Articles published in Nature and Science* N&S 20%
Articles in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index SCI 20%
Size of Institution Academic performance with respect to the size of an institution Size 10%
    Total 100%

My Comments : Infrastructure and availability of funds are the main reasons of Indian Universities not execlling like World's other universities. This is true for IIT, AIIMS etc. Research project gets delayed becaused of funds and by the time funds are approved, researcher spends their research time on doing less significant work which makes them less productive.
