Madhya Bharat (मध्य भारत) was an Indian state in west-central India, created on 28 May 1948[1] from twenty-five princely states which until 1947 had been part of the Central India Agency, with Jivaji Rao Scindia as its Rajpramukh.

Location

The union had an area of 120,380 km2.[2] Gwalior was the winter capital and Indore was the summer capital. It was bordered by the states of Bombay (presently Gujarat and Maharashtra) to the southwest, Rajasthan to the northeast, Uttar Pradesh to the north, Uttar Pradesh and Vindhya Pradesh to the east, and Bhopal State and Madhya Pradesh to the southeast.

Madhya Bharat districts

Madhya Bharat comprised sixteen districts[3] and these districts were initially divided into three Commissioners' Divisions, which were later reduced to two. The districts were:

Merger into Madhya Pradesh

On 1 November 1956, Madhya Bharat, together with the states of Vindhya Pradesh and Bhopal State, was merged into Madhya Pradesh.

Madhya Bharat Plateau

Madhya Bharat state was situated in the Madhya Bharat plateau (presently lying under most of northwestern Madhya Pradesh state and Central Rajasthan). This plateau is bounded by the Indo-Gangetic plain to the north, the Bundelkhand upland to the east, the Malwa Plateau to the south, and the East Rajasthan Uplands on the west.

ठाकुर देशराज[4] ने लिखा है .... [पृ.559]: चंबल, माही, सिंधु और शिप्रा आदि नदियों से आच्छादित भू भाग का नाम मध्य भारत है। प्राचीन काल में अवंति, भोज, निषद, गोप आदि लोगों के प्रसिद्ध जनपद थे और उनके बाद मौर्य, मालव, शक, गुप्त आदि वंशो ने इस भूभाग पर राज्य किया था। चंड महासेन, पुष्यमित्र, अग्निमित्र, शूद्रक, नल और विक्रमादित्य जैसे प्रातः स्मरणीय महापुरुषों को जन्म देने का इस भूमि को सौभाग्य प्राप्त है।

इस पवित्र देश का महान इतिहास है। उस इतिहास में जाटों का भी बड़ा साझा है। ईसवी सन से पहले के यहां के प्रसिद्ध पुरुषों में कौन-कौन जाट थे इस विवादास्पद विषय को छोड़कर इस पुस्तक में हम केवल उन्हें इतिवृत्त को देना चाहते हैं जिनके अवशेष अभी मौजूद हैं। आज कल इस प्रदेश में ग्वालियर और इंदौर 2 बड़े राज्य शामिल हैं। इनके अलावा देवास, धार, झाबुआ आदिवासी छोटे राज्य हैं। हम सभी जगह तो नहीं पहुंच सके किंतु जो भी कुछ घूम फिर कर हमने सामग्री यहां के जाटों के बारे में संग्रह की है उसे यहां देते हैं।
