History

It is known for shvetambar centre from 10th century AD. The Parshvanatha temple of this place is as old as 972 AD. It has also temple dedicated to Mahavira. [1]

The remains of Chalcolithic culture have been recovered from the excavation of Ahar (1800-1300 BC) and Gelund sites of Bana valley in Rajasthan. The date of this culture is 2000 BC to 500 BC. Later it was occupied by the 'Iron Age People'. [2]

Ahar, Kayatha, and Malwa cultures

Dr Naval Viyogi[3] writes about The South and the Central Indian Cultures of Chalcolithic Age: (Ahar, Kayatha, and Malava) ...The remains of Chalcolithic culture have been recovered from the excavation of Ahar and Gelund sites of Bana valley in Rajasthan [4]The date of this culture is 2000 BC-500 BC. Later it was occupied by the 'Iron Age People'. The latest Carbon date of Kalibanga has been calculated to be 1500 B.C. It means Harappan culture survived there later, for a period of about 300 years. In this way Harappan culture of Kalibanga and Chalcolithic culture of Ahar lived contemporarily for a long period of about 700 years (2000 BC-1300 BC). The date 1725 BC, derived by the Tata Institute of Technology Bombay, is also not less contemporary. Since the carbon dates of Eran (Distt [[Sagar Madhya Pradesh]]), Navadatoli (Distt Nimad in Madhya Pradesh), Nevasa (Distt Ahmad Nagar), Songaon, Inamgaon Chandoli (Distt Pune M.R.) etc have been fixed within the second millenium B.C. From this it has become clear that Chalcolithic culture developed in the South and the Central India[5] during the last period of Harappan culture or last phase of some sites or just after.

In this age, the successive development of three cultures of Kayatha, Malava and Jorve is also evident. The Savalda culture of Tapti valley is of some specific type, but it is similar to Kayatha culture. Remains of whatever Chalcolithic culture have come to hands from Maheshwara and Navadatoli (9 kms South of Indore) lying in between Ujjain and Indore, has been named as Malava culture. On a later date, from excavation of Kayatha (on the bank of Kali Sindh) we have come to know about a rich Chalcolithic culture, which developed a few centuries (about 2000 BC) earlier than the Malava culture. Ahar, Kayatha and Malava cultures are so similar that it will be Justified to call them fundamentally one culture. The Ahar and the Kayatha cultures should be taken as parent cultures of Malava[6].

Owing to fixation of carbon-14 date[7] of Malva culture between 1660 ± 130 and 1445 ± 130 BC, period of its origin has been decided 1500 BC (Aggarwal-l971). Evidences of extension of this culture from the region of Ujjain and Navadatoli up to the Tapti and onward up to the Bhima valley, has been noted from the excavation of Chandoli, Songaon and Inamgaon.[8]

5,000-yr-old Ahar remains enthrall archaeologists

Archaeologists are enthralled at the discovery of a multi-cultural site near Moola Mata temple at Kapasan town in Chittorgarh. Of the remains found here in three different layers, one beneath the other, the oldest one identified dates back to 5,000-year-old Ahar culture while the other two are believed to fall somewhere between around 2,500 and 1,000 years, respectively. This is the 116th site found so far of the Ahar civilization whose remains is believed to be sprawled in a vast area across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Archaeologists have found typical white painted black and red ware pottery pieces which are known as the peculiar and distinct feature of the Ahar civilization. The chemical analysis of the discovered material is expected to bring important revelations on how the culture flourished in different periods, experts claim.

The discovery came when an official of the Nagar Palika happened to visit the temple recently. He was informed by the residents of remains seen on the mound thus suggesting a possibility of some ancient civilization unearthed. Taking the clue the officer ordered excavation at the site few days back and what came out stunned everyone. Pillars, pieces of earthen pots, brick walls, broken pieces of stone structures were discovered from the site.

"It is a huge mound which roughly measures 250 m north-south and 150 m east-west. Remains of Ahar culture are superimposed by a very thick cultural deposit of Historic and Medieval phase," informed Prof Jeevan Singh Kharakwal, director, Sahitya Sansthan of Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University. The total cultural deposit is about 10m thick.

"We visited the site since a few members of a medieval temple got exposed while digging for soil to level the ground. The local villagers are making a shrine of Moola Mata on top of this mound. Our close examination thus revealed that it is a multicultural site. There are a few well-known Ahar culture sites such as Gilund, Umand, Rawalia in this area located about 20, 8 and 11 km respectively, from Moola Mata," Kharakwal said.

The exploration was carried out jointly by a team of Sahitya Sansthan, Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Udaipur and Ahar museum, Udaipur.

From Anaunpoor came he of Brahmin [Vipra cula] race (may he flourish), Muhee Deva Sri Goha Dit, from whom became famous on the earth the Gohil, tribe:

2. Bhoj.
3. Mahindra.
4. Naga.
5. Syeela.
6. Aprajit.
7. Mahindra, no equal as a warrior did then exist on the earth’s surface.
8. Kalbhoj was resplendent as the sun (Arc).
9. Khoman, an unequalled warrior; from him
10. Bhitrpad, the Tiluk of the three worlds; and from whom was
11. Singji; whose Ranee Maha Lakmee, ‘of the warlike race of Rashtra (Rahtore), and from her was born:
12. Sri Ullut. To him who subdued the earth and became its lord, was born Haria Devi: her praise was known in Hurspoora; and from her was born a mighty warrior in whose arm victory reposed; the Khetri of the field of battle, who broke the confederacy of his foes, and from the tree of whose fortune riches were the fruit: an altar of learning, from him was
13. Nirvahana. By daughter of Sri Jaijah, of Chauana race, was born
14. Salvahana. Such were their (the princes whose names are given) fortunes which I(related. From him was born
15. Secti Koomar. How can he be described ?—He who conquered and made his own the three qualifications (sacti Priboo, Ootccha and Muntri); whose fortunes equaled those of Bhitarpad. In the abode of wealth Sri Aitpoor, which he had made his dwelling, surrounded by crowd of princes; the kulpdroom to his people; whose foot-soldiers are many; with vaults of treasure—whose fortunes have ascended to heaven—whose city derives its beauty from the intercourse of merchants; and in which there is but one single evil, the killing darts from the bright eyes of beauty, carrying destruction to the vassals of the prince.
Atpur Inscription of Shaktikumara 977 A.D.[14]

The earliest epigraphic record containing a full genealogy of the family is inscription dated 977 AD found at Atpur. It gives the names of 20 kings in an unbroken line of succession beginning from Guhadatta and ending in Shaktikumara. Allowing five reins in a century Guhadatta may be placed in second half of the sixth century AD. This view is corroborated by other epigraphic evidences, but goes against the bardic tradition that the Guha, the founder of the family , was the son of Siladitya, the last ruler of Valabhi, as the later was on the throne till at least 766 AD.[15]

The inscription of Atpur (Ahar) of V.S 1034 has mentioned the first king's name as Guhadatta meaning gift of Guha or Sadanana, the first son of God Shiva, the family deity of this family.[16]

Ahar Devakulika Inscription of 977 AD
