Arrah (आरा) or Ara is a city in Bhojpur district in Bihar, India.

Origin of name
Location
It is the district headquarters of Bhojpur district, located near the confluence of the Ganges and Sone rivers, some 24 miles from Danapur and 36 miles from Patna.
History
Arrah is an ancient city with references in mythological stories and Greek geographical works. It has been a centre of attraction for Jainism with dozens of old temples and hermitages.
It is known for the important battle (Battle of Buxar) in October, 1764, when Mir Kasim, Nawab of Bengal with the support of the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and Shuja-ud-daulla, Nawab of Avadh was defeated by the East India Company Army whilst Henry Vansittart, was Governor General, the key event establishing the British colonisation of India.

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ... अराड़ (AS, p.38) डॉ. होए के अनुसार अराड़ वर्तमान आरा (ज़िला शाहबाद, बिहार) का प्राचीन नाम है। उनके अनुसार गौतम बुद्ध का समकालीन दार्शनिक अराड़कलाम यहीं का निवासी था।[2]
आरामनगर
विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है ... आरामनगर (AS, p.69) बिहार राज्य के शाहाबाद ज़िले में स्थित आरा का प्राचीन नाम कहा जाता है।
देशवाल जाटों का राज्य
महाभारत युद्ध के बाद देशवाल जाटों का राज्य मध्यपूर्व में रहा। इसका एक प्रमाण यह है -
- सन् 41 में खरोष्टी भाषा में लिखा हुआ अरा (Ara) में शिलालेख है जो कि अटक के निकट है। उस पर लिखा है कि देशवहर (Dashavjara) ने अपने माता-पिता के सम्मान में एक कुंआ खुदवाया था। यह देशवाल वंशज जाट राजा था। यह जाट वंश पहले से अफगानिस्तान में आबाद था।[4]
