Atrai River (आत्रेयी नदी) flows in West Bengal and northern parts of Bangladesh.

Origin ofname
In ancient times the river was called Atrei and finds a mention in the Mahabharata. It is linked with Karatoya River.
Course
It originates in West Bengal and then after flowing through Dinajpur District of Bangladesh, it enters India again.[1] It passes through Kumarganj and Balurghat community development blocks in Dakshin Dinajpur district. The river then renters Bangladesh. It splits into two rivers—the Gabura and the Kankra in Dinajpur district. It crosses the Barind Tract and flows into Chalan Beel.[2]
History
Tej Ram Sharma[3] mentions: 11 . Vata-nadi (वाटा-नदी) (No. 43, L. 22) : We get a reference to the Vata-nadi in an inscription at Kalaikuri, Sultanpur near Naogaon, Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. It was flowing to the east of a village named Dhanyapatalika. The Vata nadi appears to be the modern Bara-nai, Singra lying about 10 miles to the north-east of its junction with the Atrai. It flews west to east through the southern part of the Rajshahi district.

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[4] ने लेख किया है ... 1. आत्रेयी नदी (AS, p.62): 'करतोया तथात्रेयी लोहित्यश्च महानदी।'(महाभारत 2,9,221)
इस उल्लेख के अनुसार आत्रेयी गोदावरी की एक छोटी शाखा का नाम है। यह पंचवटी के निकट गोदावरी में मिलती है। गोदावरी की सात शाखाए मानी गई हैं।

In Mahabharata

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 9 mentions the Kings Oceans and the Rivers who attended Sabha of Varuna. Atreyi River लाङ्गली is mentioned in Mahabharata (2-9-26). [5]....the Sarayu, the Varavatya, and that queen of rivers the Langali, the Karatoya, the Atreyi, the Lauhitya....
The Mahabharata Tribe - Atreya (आत्रेय) has been mentioned as northwestern primitive tribe (VI.10.67), possibly located in Atari, between Lahore and Amritsar. They were later initiated in the Brahmin gotras of Atri and Bharadwaja.

- औपकाश च कलिङ्गाश च किरातानां च जातयः (VI.10.67)
The Mahabharata Tribe - Atreya (आत्रेय) may be identified with Jat Gotra - Atri (अत्री).
Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 9 mentions Rivers Langali, the Karatoya and Atreyi.
