Barwani (बड़वानी) is a city and district in Madhya Pradesh.

Location

The town is situated near the left bank of the Narmada River, and is the administrative headquarters of Barwani District. It has served as the capital of the former princely state of Barwani. It can be reached by road only. Bawangaja, a Jain pilgrimage place, is 8 km from Barwani.

Barwani is located at 22.03°N 74.9°E. It has an average elevation of 178 metres (583 feet). The great Narmada River flows through Barwani (5 km from city center). Barwani is surrounded by the great hills of Satpura. The city is also called the Paris of Nimar. Nimar region is split into East Nimar and West Nimar. Nimar, in local terms, means "area beyond the Neem Trees". Barwani lies in West Nimar. Barwani is famous for its Papitas and Bawangaja (a Jain holy place 8 km from Barwani).

Origin of name

The name Badwani originated from the forests of BAD (बड़) which had surrounded the city in old times. WANI (वनी) is the old word for the Garden. Hence city got its name BADWANI which means Garden of Bads. Barwani is still pronounced as Badwani but it spells Barwani.

Bijasan (बीजासन) बरवानी, मध्य प्रदेश के सबसे लोकप्रिय दर्शनीय स्थलों में से एक है। यह सेंधवाडा से लगभग 20 कि.मी. की दूरी पर आगरा-मुंबई राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग पर स्थित है। यहाँ देवी बीजासनी या दुर्गा का समर्पित प्राचीन मंदिर है, जिसे देखने के लिए लोग दूर-दूर से आते हैं। बीजासन के निकट ही अंजद, सेंधवाडा और भवरगढ़ का क़िला है।[2]

बड़वानी

बरवानी मध्य प्रदेश राज्य का एक ज़िला और ऐतिहासिक स्थान है, जो पूर्व मध्यकालीन ऐतिहासिक अवशेषों के लिए उल्लेखनीय है। यह नर्मदा नदी के तट पर स्थित है। बरवानी को 'बडवानी' और 'सिद्ध नगर' नाम से भी जाना जाता है।मध्य प्रदेश के दक्षिणी हिस्से में स्थित बरवानी ज़िला, सतपुडा पहाड़ियों और विन्ध्य वनों से घिरा हुआ है। बरवानी अपने प्राचीन स्मारकों के लिए बहुत प्रसिद्ध है। 5430 वर्ग कि.मी. में फैले बरवानी पर 13वीं शताब्दी में राणा शासकों का अधिकार था। चूलगिरी के नाम से विख्यात यहाँ का बावनगंज जैन धर्म के तीर्थ स्थलों का प्रमुख केन्द्र है। यहाँ की पहाड़ी पर 15वीं शताब्दी में बने 11 मंदिरों को देखा जा सकता है। विश्व की सबसे ऊँची आदिनाथ की प्रतिमा यहीं स्थापित है।[3]
