Birdi (बिरडी) is a Gotra found among the Sikh Jats.

History

Birdi are mostly east of Chahbar (Chabahar) and the Birdis are camel-owners.[1]The total number of all camels in Kulanch (1904) is estimated at some 2000 animals. Dasht is famous for its riding camels, it probably possesses about camels of all sorts and the largest owners are the Dashti, Latti, Birdi, Lagor and Langasi.[2]

Subodh Kapoor[3] mentions that Pottinger included amongst the Maghazzi,the Abrah, Burdi, Isobani, Jakrah, Jakrani, Jalani, Jataki, kalandarani, lashari, Matihi, Musani, Kakrani, Nari, Turbandzai and Unar. Postans considered them to be of Jat origin.


Subodh Kapoor[4] writes that Virdi is also pronounced as Birdi. It has been traced the history of Birdi in Baluchistan, Makran, Iran, Pakistan area. ...The present population of Makran, about 200,000,consists,---1st,of Gitchki, Boledi, and Malikah, who furnished the ruling chiefs in Makran; 2d,the second class are great and powerful tribes,some of them of Brahui origin,viz.the Bizanju, Nusherwani, Mirwari (Brahui),and some Narui or Baluch,viz.Hot and Sind;3d, tribes of respectability, viz.;-- Ashkani, Bari, Band, [[Birdi], Gojah, Gorji, Jatgal, Kaodai, Kalmati, etc.....The Birdi is tribe settled in Makran.


The Dasht district extends from Gwetar Bay, N.E. to the vicinity of Kej, a distance of about 100 miles.The inhabitants are member of Bar, Birdi, Hot, Kaodai, Shahzadah and Sind tribes.[5]

Branch of Maghazzi

Subodh Kapoor [6] mentions that Maghazzi is one of three great tribes of Baluchistan, the other two being the Nahrui and Kind. Jell and Shadia are the chief towns of Maghazzi, who have been located for long time in Kachi. They are divided into four principal clans, of which the Bhutani is the more illustrious and furnishes the Sirdar of the whole. The Maghazzi and the Rind are alike addicted to the abuse of ardent spirits bhang and opium. Their clans are the Abra, Birdi, Isobani, Jakra, Jakrani, Jatki, Kakrani, Kalandarani, Lashari, Maghzi, Mntaiki, Musani, Nari, Turbandzai and Unar.

Maghazzi also knows as Magzi or Magsi. Maghazzi is a Baloch tribe, and Baloch are also mentioned as Jat clan. So, Birdi is showing as a clan of Maghazzi in this book so Birdi are also be called as Jats as branch of Maghazzi.
