Champaranya (चंपारण्य) was an ancient region and Forest now known as Champaran in Bihar state of India. Another Champaranya is a place of historical importance in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh, India.

Champaranya or Champakaranya derives name Champa or champaka means magnolia. Aranya in sanskrit means forest. Hence, Champaranya means forest of magnolia trees.

Champaran is a historic region which now forms the East Champaran district, and the West Champaran district in Bihar, India. Champaran is part of the cultural Mithila region.

The name Champaran derives from Champa-aranya orChampkatanys. Champa or champaka means magnolia and aranya means forest. Hence, Champaranya means forest of magnolia trees. It is believed that the forest was named while its western portion was inhabited by solitary ascetics.

Champaran, Chhattisgarh

Champaran, formerly known as Champajhar, is a village in the Raipur District in the state of Chhattisgarh, India, which lies about 60 km from the state capital of Raipur via Arang and 30 Km from Mahasamund Via Bamhani, Tila.[1]

The village is identified with Champaranya and therefore has religious significance as the birthplace of the Saint Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya, the reformer and founder of the Vallabh sect also known as Pushtimarg. A temple has been constructed in his honour. Near this is a temple of Champakeshwara Mahadeva. There are two Baithaks of Vallabhacharya's Chaurasi Bethak here.

चंपारण्य-चंपकारण्य

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[2] ने लेख किया है ...1. चंपारण्य (AS, p.322): चंपारण्य या 'चंपकारण्य' प्राचीन काल में बिहार में बड़ी गंडक के तट के समीप विस्तीर्ण वन था। महाभारत, वनपर्व में तीर्थ यात्रानुपर्व के अंतर्गत कौशिकी नदी (वर्तमान कोसी, बिहार) के पश्चात् चंपारण्य का उल्लेख है- 'ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र चंपकारण्यमुत्तमम्, तत्रोष्य रजनीमेकां गोसहस्त्रफलं लभेत्' वनपर्व 84, 133.

चंपारण्य के क्षेत्र में गंडकी नदी के तट पर बगहा नगर बसा हुआ है, इसे लोग 'नारायणी' तथा 'शालिग्रामी' भी कहते हैं। बगहा से 25 मील की दूरी पर दरबाबारी में गंडक, पंचनद तथा सोनहा नदियों का संगम है। निकट ही बावनगढ़ी के खंडहर हैं, जहाँ पांडवों ने अपने वनवास का कुछ समय व्यतीत किया था। पौराणिक किंवदतियों के अनुसार चंपारण्य वही स्थान है, जहाँ श्रीमद्भागवत में वर्णित गजग्राह युद्ध हुआ था, किंतु श्रीमद्भागवत के अनुसार

[p.323]: इस आख्यायिका की घटना स्थली त्रिकूट पर्वत के निकट थी। गंडक की घाटी में गज और ग्राह के पैरों के चिन्ह भी (श्रद्धालु लोगों की कल्पना के अनुसार) पाए जाते हैं। चंपारण्य में संगम के निकट वह स्थान भी है, जहाँ से सीता ने राम की सेना तथा लवकुश में होने वाला युद्ध देखा था। यहीं संग्रामपुर का ग्राम है, जहाँ वाल्मीकि का आश्रम बताया जाता है। चंपारन का ज़िला प्राचीन चंपारण्य के क्षेत्र में ही बसा हुआ है।

2. चंपारण्य (AS, p.322): रायपुर ज़िला, मध्य प्रदेश (वर्तमान छत्तीसगढ़) में स्थित एक ऐतिहासिक स्थान और 16वीं शती के प्रसिद्ध महात्मा तथा भक्तिमार्ग के प्रमुख प्रचारक वल्लभाचार्य का जन्म स्थान है। वल्लभाचार्य के पिता का नाम लक्ष्मणभट्ट तथा माता का नाम इलम्मा था। ये आंध्र प्रदेश के कांकरवाड़ ग्राम के रहने वाले तैलंग ब्राह्मण थे। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि लक्ष्मणभट्ट सस्त्रीक काशी की यात्रा पर गए हुए थे और मार्ग में ही चंपारण्य के स्थान पर वल्लभचार्य का जन्म हुआ। (1478 ई.) वल्लभाचार्य की सोलहवीं शती के महापुरुषों में गणना की जाती है। ये भक्तिवाद के प्रतिपादक थे। महाकवि सूरदास इन्हीं के शिष्य थे। कुछ लोगों के मत में वल्लभाचार्य का जन्म स्थान बिहार के चंपारण के निकट चतुर्भुजपुर है।

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 82 mentions names Pilgrims. Champakaranya (चम्पकारण्य) (Tirtha/Forest) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.82.114). [3].... Repairing then to the River Kausiki (कौशिकी) (III.82.113) that cleanseth from even great sins, one should bathe in it. By this one obtaineth the merit of Rajasuya sacrifice. One should next, O foremost of kings, proceed to the excellent woods of Champakaranya (चम्पकारण्य) (III.82.114) . By spending there one night, one acquireth the merit of giving away a thousand kine.....
