Nadia Rivers

Churni is a stream in the Nadia district of the Indian state of West Bengal.[1] It is a distributary of the Mathabhanga River, itself a distributary of the Padma River at Munshiganj in the Kushtia District of Bangladesh. The Mathabanga divides into two rivers, the Ichamati and the Churni near Majhdia in Nadia district.[2]

The Churni flows through Shibnivas, Hanskhali, Birnagar, Aranghata, and Ranaghat, and finally joins River Bhagirathi-Hooghly near Chakdaha.[3]

History

चूर्णी नदी

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[4] ने लेख किया है ...चूर्णी नदी (AS, p.342) का उल्लेख कौटिल्य के 'अर्थशास्त्र' (शामशास्त्री पृ. 75) में हुआ है। इस नदी के पर वंजि नामक नगर, जो कि कोचीन के सन्निकट है, बसा हुआ था। इस नदी के पास ही केरल की प्राचीन राजधानी स्थित थी। चूर्णी नदी के मुहाने पर 'क्रंगनूर' या रोमन लेखकों का 'मुजीरिस' बसा हुआ था, जिसका प्राचीन नाम 'मरिचीपत्तन' था। इस नदी का अभिज्ञान केरल की पेरियार नदी से किया गया है। (रायचौधरी, पृ. 273.)
