History
Gangavati town
Gangavati is a town, municipality and taluk in the Koppal district of the Indian state of Karnataka. Gangavati lies at an average elevation of 406 metres , and is situated close to the Tungabhadra Dam. It is a taluka of Koppal, a district which was previously part of Raichur and recently Gangavathi taluk bifurcated into kanakagiri and karatagi, those are new taluks in koppal district.
गंगवती नदी
विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ...गंगवती नदी (AS, p.261) को महाभारत में उल्लिखित (एक पाठ के अनुसार) 'गोकर्ण तीर्थ' (वनपर्व 88, 15) के पास बहने वाली नदी बताया गया है। गंगवती और समुद्र के संगम पर गोकर्ण तीर्थ स्थित था। अन्य पाठों में गंगवती के स्थान पर ताम्रपर्णी नदी का उल्लेख है।

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 86 mentions the sacred tirthas of the south. Gokarna (गॊकर्ण) (Tirtha) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.86.12).[3] ...I shall now describe Tamraparni (ताम्रपर्णी) (III.86.11) . In that asylum the gods had undergone penances impelled by the desire of obtaining salvation. In that region also is the lake of Gokarna (गॊकर्ण) (III.86.12) which is celebrated over the three worlds, hath an abundance of cool waters, and is sacred, auspicious, and capable, O child, of producing great merit. That lake is extremely difficult of access to men of unpurified souls.
