Kauravya (कौरव्य) was name of a Janapada and were people of the same name known to Panini and mentioned in Mahabharata. Kauravya was name of a Nagavanshi king.

History

V. S. Agrawala[3] writes that Ashtadhyayi of Panini mentions janapada Kauravya (कौरव्य) under Bhargadi (भर्गादि) (IV.1.178).


V. S. Agrawala[4] writes that Panini mentions Kshatriya caste in connection with Gotras, janapadas and sanghas. For example the Kuru Gotra appeared both in Brahmanas (IV.1.151) and Kshatriyas (IV.1.172). If the father was a Brahmana, he and his young (yuvan) son were both called Kauravya but if Kshatriya they would be Kauravya and Kauravyāyaṇi (II.4.58, Kashika).

In Mahabharata

Kauravya (कौरव्य) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.31.13), (I.52.11), (II.28.33), (II.31.8), (II.48.24), (V.101.15), (VI.10.53), (VIII.23.25), (VIII.30.73), (IX.45.9).


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 31 mentions names of Chief Nagas. Kauravya is included in verse (I.31.13). [5]


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 52 mentions Names of all those Nagas that fell into the fire of the snake-sacrifice. Kauravya is included in verse (I.52.11). [6].... Nagas of the race Kauravya: Now hear, the names of the snakes I mention born in the race of Kauravya: Aindila, Kundala, Munda, Veniskandha, Kumaraka, Bahuka, Shringavega, Dhurtaka, Patapatara and Astaka (?). There born in the race of Kauravya fell into the fire.


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 31 mentions Kshatriyas brought tributes on Rajasuya sacrifice of Yudhisthira. Kauravya is included in verse (II.31.8). [7]


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 48 describes Kings who presented tributes to Yudhishthira. Kauravya is included in verse (II.48.24). [8]


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 48 describes Rajasuya sacrifice of Yudhisthira attended by the chiefs of many islands and countries. Kauravya is included in verse (III.48.24)...."I shall, O chief of the Kurus, assisted by Rama and Bhima and Arjuna and the twins and Akrura and Gada and Shamva and Pradyumna...." [9]


Udyoga Parva/Mahabharata Book V Chapter 101 mentions Bhogavati city and innumerable Nagas. Kauravya is included in verse (V.101.15). [10]


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 Describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. Kauravya as a province is included in verse (VI.10.53)...."the Darvikas, the Kachas, the Darvas, the Vatajamas, the Rathoragas, Bahuvadyas, the Kauravyas, the Sudamanas, the Sumallikas;...." [11]


Karna Parva/Mahabharata Book VIII Chapter 23 mentions Kauravya in verse (VIII.23.25). [12]


Karna Parva/Mahabharata Book VIII Chapter 30 gives description blaming the Vahikas and Madrakas. Kauraveya is included in verse (VIII.30.73) [13]


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 28 mentions Sahadeva's march towards south: kings and tribes defeated. Kauraveya is included in verse (II.28.33) [14]


Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 45 gives List of the mothers who became the companions when Skanda was installed. Kauraveya is included in verse (IX.45.9). [15]
