Map of Bangladesh

Karatoya River (करतॊया) a small stream in Rajshahi Division of Bangladesh, was once a large and sacred river.

Variants of name

Location

A channel of it presently flows by the ancient ruins of Mahasthangarh (or Pundranagara, ancient capital of Pundravardhana) in Bogra District.

Origin of name

The name of the river is formed of two Bengali words kar (hand) and toa (water), signifying, in Hindu mythology, that the river was formed by the water which was poured on the hands of Shiva, when he married Parvati.[1]

History

The Karatoya mahatmya bears testimony to its past greatness.[2]

In the Mahabharata it is mentioned that a visit to the Karatoya after three days’ fast produces the same merit as an aswamedha (horse killing) sacrifice.[3]

Another ancient city, Sravasti, may have been located on the banks of the Karatoya, north of Mahasthangarh. However, there is a controversy about the possible location of Sravasti.[4]

In Mahabharata

Karatoya River (करतॊया) (R)/(T) in Mahabharata (2-9-26), (III.83.3),(VI.10.34), (XIII.26.11),

Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 26 mentions the sacred waters on the earth. Gandhamadana (गन्धमादन) (Mountain) in Mahabharata (I.32.3), (III.13.11), (III.267.5), (V.158.12),(VIII.30.78), (XIII.26.11). [5].... Repairing to Indratoya in the vicinity of the mountains of Gandhamadana and next to Karatoya in the country called Kuranga, one should observe a fast for three days and then bathe in those sacred waters with a concentrated heart and pure body. By doing this, one is sure to acquire the merit of a Horse-sacrifice.
