Birth

Major Poonia belongs to a small village Rajpura in Sikar distt near Jhunjhunu of Rajasthan.

Career in sports

Hee participated in World Medical & Health Games representing India, and won Gold Medal in Power Lifting, Silver Medal in Disc throw, & bronze Medal in Jevelline throw. He is the first doctor who participated in the tournament. President congratulated him on wining 3 medals for India.

Major Surendra Poonia participated for the first time this year in the 31st World Medical & Health Games held in Porec, Croatia from July 3-10 2010 as an independent candidate, in the under-35 age category. He won the following medals – Gold Medal in Power Lifting ,Silver medal in Discus Throw and Bronze Medal in Javeline Throw.

This is the first time that an Indian national has won medals at this international Championship. The her excellency Honorable president of India Smt Pratibha Devi Singh Patil congratulated him personally and facilitated major Poonia at Rashtrapati Bhawan on his arrival from Games and felt very happy about the achievements of the officer serving under her in Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The World Medical & Health Games is an international sporting event open exclusively to all health professionals in any level.This year More then 2700 athletes from 47 countries participated in 22 sports in an Olympic spirit.

Career in Army Medical Corps

Dr Surendra Poonia is alumni of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. He is from I-2 batch of Armed forces Medical College, Pune. He was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps (AMC) in August 2001. He is currently serving with The President’s Bodyguard, Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi as the Medical Officer. Dr Poonia is a keen sportsman, medal winner at college and university level as well as a qualified paratrooper (93 jumps). After being commissioned into the AMC, he cleared the probation test of the Parachute Regiment and Indian Special Forces, the elitest volunteer force of the Indian Army. He was awarded Chief of Army Staff Commendation while serving with 10 Para SF In JK.

Vishisht Seva Medal

He was Awarded with Vishisht Seva Medal on 26 January 2012. [1]
