  • Mamte (Jat clan) = Mahāmātā (Pali) = Mahamatragana (महामात्र गण) (L.4) is mentioned in Nagardhan Plates Of Svamiraja - (Kalachuri) Year 322 (=573 AD). [1]...A Mahamatra (meaning "Officer of high rank")[2] was an "officer of morality" established by the Maurya Emperor Ashoka (reigned 269-233 BCE). The Mahamatras are mentioned in several of the Edicts of Ashoka, inscribed on rocks or pillars. They seem to have been an essential part of his government.[3]
