Tharparkar (Hindi: थरपारकर, Urdu: (تھرپارکر ) is a district of Sindh province, Pakistan. Its Headquarters are in Mithi town.

Origin

The word 'Tharparkar' means "After crossing the Thar desert" (of Rajasthan, India). This district of Pakistan borders the Rajasthan state of India. One corner of its Nagarparkar sub-division also borders Indian state of Gujarat.

According to 1998 census, Muslims constitute 59.42% of the population, the Hindus 33.78% and Schedule Castes 6.69%. The significant number of Hindus migrated to India during the 1965 and 1971 wars.

V. S. Agrawala[2] writes that Ashtadhyayi of Panini mentions janapada Pāraskara (पारस्कर) - The name corresponds with Tharaparkar (Thara being the Sindhi form of Thala meaning dry country or desert, as opposed too Kachchha or Jangala country). Paraskara in name of mountain and term Pārakara for non mountainous region such as Tharparkar.
