Pulwama (पुलवामा) is a town and a district in Jammu and Kashmir. Pulwama was known as Panwangam in antiquity.[1] and later as Pulgam)[2]

Origin of name

The original name of Pulwama town (from which the district takes its name) was Panwangam. Over the centuries it got shortened to Pulgam. This in turn gradually changed to Pulwama. [5]

History

Pulwama being a part of the beautiful valley is bounded by Srinagar in the North by Budgam and Poonch Districts the west and by Anantnag Districts in the South and East. The District was formed in 1979 by separation of Tehsils Pulwama, Shopian and Tral of District Anantnag. The district is administratively divided into four Tehsils I.e.Pulwama, Pampore, Awantipora.

The district is famous for Archaeological monuments especially for those left by Raja Avantivarman & Lalitaditya religious shrines like that of Khan-Kahi Faiz Panah of Shah Hamdan (R.A) at Tral and temple of Jwalamukhi at Khrew. Mughal Road, the famous Shahrah is also a communication path of the district with other parts of the country.

The district is reported to be one of the pretty spots on the earth, because of its congenial climate, innumerable springs streams, water falls, fragrant flowers, delicious fruits and other natural sceneries. Besides District Pulwama is famous all over the world for saffron cultivation which is mainly grown in Karewa lands of Pampore, Kakapora and Pulwama Blocks.

There are important shrines and temples in the District to name a few Khankha Tral built by Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, the great saint and scholar of Iran, besides the town Awantipora present the remnant of the building and sculptures of the time of the king of Awantivarman.


Economy: Agriculture is the main occupation of people. 70% people are engaged with this activity and the remaining 30% are engaged with other occupations. The district is also famous in Fruit Cultivation. Tehsils Pampore have acquired in the district a distinction for cultivation of SAFFRAN. The Saffron “Crocus-Sativus” of Kashmir is famous for its bouquet and is in great demand as condiment and as a pigment for forehead marks of the Hindus. Agriculture contributes a major portion of the income of the people residing in the district followed by Fruit Cultivation. However, Industrial Sector is also developing. Till date 2736 SSI units have come up in the district and registered with the district Industries Centre, Pulwama providing employment to 13123 persons ( position ending 31.03.2011). The district is also rich in minerals, though only Lime Stone is being coveted for manufacture of cement at Zaina Trag Khrew area of Pampore Block. The Geology and mining department is conducting surveys for exploitation of the possibilities of other minerals also.

Forest, Green gold of union territory, are in abundance in the district and the contributes a remarkable share in the union territory income.

Origin of name: According to the revenue records the original name of Pulwama was Panwangam which comprised 4 villages namely Malikpora, Dangerapora, Chatpora and Dalipora. The pities is continue to be know by these names, as some stages Panwangam become to be called as “Pulgam” which was with the passage of time changed to the present name of Pulwama.

It has a rich and cultural and historical background which legendry people having born and brought-up in the district and ancients kings choosing the area as their Capital the Kashmir Rural Awantipora founded Awantipora as his capital city. The remains of the city are still located at site 28 kms from Srinagar, in the form of Awanti Swami temple ruins on the left side of the Srinagar Jammu national highway. The archaeological movements at Awantipora, Jawlerari Kakapora and other places signify the rich history of the District Awantiverman (855-883 A.D.) was great patron of Art sculpture. Besides Awanti Swami temple, he built another one, about a kilometer away, at Jawlerari. There temples according to history were circled by artificial lakes. After the death of the king. It is said that his son, Shanker Varma ascended the throne and retained Awantipora as his capital. He conquered many areas and extended his kingdom beyond Kashmir with his large Army raised from the local people.

Pawan Kumar Khatkad - Captain Pawan Kumar (1993- 2016) was from Badhana, Jind district in Haryana, died fighting terrorists on Sunday 21.2.2016 in Pampore of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir. Captain Pawan Kumar of 10 Para attained martyrdom leading his men from the front in a tricky deliberate operation against the terrorists hiding in a government building in Pampore area on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Sunday morning.

Rajiv Kumar Joon - Major Rajiv Kumar Joon (05.12.1969 - 16.09.1994) became martyr on 16 September 1994 fighting militants in Pulwama of Anantnag district in Jammu & Kashmir. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra and Shaurya Chakra. He was from village Garhi Kheddi of tahsil and district, Rohtak, Haryana.

Rajendra Nain (d.31.12.2017) was from Gorisar village in Ratangarh tehsil of Churu district in Rajasthan. He became martyr of militancy on 31.12.2017 in a terrorist attack at Lethpora CRPF camp in Awantipora of Pulwama district in J&K. He belonged to 130th battalion of the force and was part of its elite Quick Reaction Team (QRT).

Sandeep Kaliraman, from village Atali, Ballabhgarh Tehsil, Faridabad district, Haryana, became martyr of militancy on 19.2.2019. He had participated in an Army operation in Pulwama. He had sustained wounds during an anti-terror operation on 12 February 2019 in Pulwama, and succumbed to his injuries at the ICU of the Army hospital in Srinagar. He is survived by his wife and three kids.

Viney Choudhary - Maj Viney Choudhary (Lora) (18.1.1968 - 29.4.1999) became martyr on 29 Apr 1999 during a counter-insurgency operation at Takia village of Pulwama District in Jammu and Kashmir. He was from village Mangalpur in Jind district of Haryana.

Sandeep Jhajharia (संदीप झाझड़िया) is Garud Commando in Indian Air Force who killed 3 militants in Pulwama encounter with terrorists though he himself was injured. Sandeep Jhajharia was part of operation against terrorists in 2017 by 55 Rashtriya Rifles in at Naira village in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. He is from village Bhadunda Khurd in Jhunjhunu tahsil of Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan.

पुलवामा

जम्‍मू और कश्‍मीर राज्‍य में स्थित पुलवामा जिला बेहद सुंदर है जिसे कश्‍मीर का धान का कटोरा कहा जाता है। इस जिले में 323 गांव है जो 5 तहसीलों के अर्न्‍तगत आते है। इन तहसीलों के नाम क्रमश: अवंतीपुरा, शोपियांन, पुलवामा, त्राल और पामपोर हैं। पुलवामा को 1979 में जिला घोषित कर दिया गया था। श्रीनगर से इस जगह की दूरी लगभग 40 किमी. है।

पुलवामा को सबसे पहले पनवानगम के नाम से जाना जाता था, बाद में पुलगाम कहा जाने लगा और वर्तमान में पुलवामा नाम हो गया। पुलवामा पर 1346 ई. से 1586 ई. तक कश्‍मीरी सुल्‍तानों ने शासन किया, बाद में 16 वीं शताब्‍दी में मुगल शासकों ने पुलवामा पर कब्‍जा कर लिया और 19 वीं शताब्‍दी के शुरूआती दौर तक अफगानों ने इस क्षेत्र पर अपना अधिपत्‍य कर लिया था। कई सल्‍तनत के शासन के कारण पुलवामा में विभिन्‍न प्रकार की धार्मिक और ऐतिहासिक संरचनाएं देखने को मिलती हैं।

पुलवामा के आस पास के स्थान: हर जगह से पर्यटकों को आकर यहां की प्रसिद्ध और ऐतिहासिक मुगल रोड़ घूमने जरूर आना चाहिए। इस रोड़ पर अहरबाल झरना, शिकारगाह, अरीपाल नाग, हुरपूरा और तरसार व मरसार झील स्थित हैं। जम्‍मू कश्‍मीर राज्‍य में सबसे ज्‍यादा पर्यटक इन्‍ही स्‍थलों पर भ्रमण करने आते है। पुलवामा में धार्मिक स्थल कुंगबट्टन और नागबेरन भी पर्यटकों के घूमने लायक जगह है। पुलवामा में कई धार्मिक स्‍थल भी है जैसे - पायेर मंदिर, अवंतेश्‍वर मंदिर, द श्राइन ऑफ शाह हमदेन, द श्राइन ऑफ सैयद हसन मांताक्‍यू आदि। जामा मस्जिद सोपियान और असर शरीफ भी इस जिले में भ्रमण करने लायक स्‍थल हैं।

कैसे पहुंचे पुलवामा: पुलवामा तक किसी भी साधन से आसानी तक पहुंचा जा सकता है। हवाई यात्रा करने वाले पर्यटक श्रीनगर के शेख-उल- आलम हवाई अड्डे तक आ सकते हैं। इस एयरपोर्ट को श्रीनगर हवाई अड्डा भी कहा जाता है। और वहां से बस से पुलवामा आना होगा। इस एयरपोर्ट से देश के कई हिस्‍सों और शहरों जैसे - जम्‍मू, मुम्‍बई, नई दिल्‍ली और बंगलौर आदि के लिए उड़ानें भरी जाती हैं। पुलवामा में कोई रेलवे स्‍टेशन नहीं है इसलिए यात्रियों को जम्‍मू तवी रेलवे स्‍टेशन पर उतरकर सड़क मार्ग से अपने गंतव्‍य स्‍थल तक पहुंचना होगा। यह रेलवे स्‍टेशन देश के कई स्‍थलों और शहरों से जुड़ा हुआ है। पुलवामा का मौसम पुलवामा पर्यटकों के बीच यहां की प्राकृतिक सुंदरता और आर्दश वातावरण के कारण प्रसिद्ध है, यहां गर्मियों में मौसम में भ्रमण करने का प्‍लान बनाएं। अप्रैल से अक्‍टूबर तक यहां घूमने का आर्दश समय है। सर्दियों में यहां का तापमान माइनस में होता है।
