History

Pravarṣaṇa (प्रवर्षण) was a peak of the mountain Gomanta. Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma once went to its top to observe the movements of their enemy Māgadha. (10th Skandha, Bhāgavata). [1][2]

Pravarṣaṇa (प्रवर्षण) was the top hill of Gomanta. Pursued by Jarāsandha, Rāma and Kṛṣṇa fled to this. Besieged by Jarāsandha.[3][4]

Lord Krishna accepted the defeat 17 times against Jarasandha. Lastly Krishna and Balrama hidden in the hills of Pravarshanagiri to escape from Jarasandha. Unable to find Krishna in the hill, Jarasandha burnt the entire hill and turned back. Krishna shifted himself along with all the Yadavas to a newly built city, Dwaraka, amidst ocean, thus inaccessible to Jarasandha.[5]

In Ramayana

Kishkindha Kanda Sarga 47 mentions that search for Sita failed in east, north, and west. Pravarshana is mentioned in Ramayana (4.47.10)[6].....All of the expeditionists have reached and venerated Sugriva who is sitting along with Rama on the peak of Mt. Prasravana and spoke this to him. [4-47-10]

In Srimad Bhgavatam

Srimad Bhgavatam (10.52.10) mentions: Apparently exhausted after fleeing a long distance, the two Lords (Krishna & Balarama) climbed a high mountain named Pravarṣaṇa, upon which Lord Indra showers incessant rain.[7]

Srimad Bhgavatam (10.52.11) mentions: Although he knew They were hiding on the mountain, Jarāsandha could find no trace of Them. Therefore, O King, he placed firewood on all sides and set the mountain ablaze.[8]

Srimad Bhgavatam (10.52.12) mentions: The two of Them then suddenly jumped from the burning mountain, which was eleven yojanas high, and fell to the ground.[9]

Srimad Bhgavatam (10.52.13) mentions: Unseen by Their opponent or his followers, O King, those two most exalted Yadus returned to Their city of Dvārakā, which had the ocean as a protective moat.[10]

Srimad Bhgavatam (10.52.14) mentions: Jarāsandha, moreover, mistakenly thought that Balarāma and Keśava had burned to death in the fire. Thus he withdrew his vast military force and returned to the Magadha kingdom.[11]
