A portrait of Sadashivrao Bhau, in Peshwa Memorial, Pune

Sadashiv Rao Bhau (सदाशिवराव भाऊ) or Sadashiv Bhau (सदाशिव भाऊ) or Sadashiv (सदाशिव), also known by short word Bhau (भाऊ), was born on 4 August 1730. He was son of Peshwa Baji Rao's brother, Chimaji Appa and Rakhmabai (Pethe family) and the nephew of Baji Rao I. He served as the Sarsenapati (commander-in-chief) of the Maratha army at the third battle of Panipat (14 January 1761).

Early life

Sadashivrao was born at Satara in a Chitpavan Brahmin family. He was the son of Peshwa Baji Rao's brother Chimaji Appa.[1]His mother Rakhmabai died when he was barely a month old. His father died when he was ten years old. He was cared by his grandmother Radhabai and his aunt Kashibai. He was very bright from early years. He was educated in Satara. His tutor was Ramchandra baba Shenvi. Nanasaheb (Balaji Baji Rao) stayed in Satara though he had become Peshwa.

His Family

His first wife's name was Umabai. She gave birth to two sons who died as soon. Umabai died in 1750. Sadashivrao's second wife was Parvatibai. She accompanied Sadashivrao Bhau during the Battle of Panipat. Sadashivrao is supposed to have died in the battle of Panipat. Parvatibai refused to accept that her husband was dead and did not live a widow's life.

The Sadashiv Peth area of Pune is named in his honour.

Early career

Sadshivrao undertook his first campaign in Karnataka in 1746 because Babuji Naik and Fateh Singh Bhonsle failed in the task assigned to them . In January 1747, he won his first battle at Ajra, south of Kolhapur .The Nawab of Savnur was chastised, the fort of Bahadur Benda was reduced and chauth was levied from the region between the rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra . Altogether, 36 parganas were captured in this campaign.

Sadashivrao's first military achievement was in 1760 in Karnataka region with Mahadjipant Purandare and Sakharam Bappu as his political advisers. He conquered from the Nawab of Savanur and subsequently annexed the cities of Kittur, Parasgad, Gokak, Yadwad, Bagalkot, Badami, Navalgund, Umbal, Giri, Torgal, Haliyal, Harihar and Basavapatna. He crushed the revolt of Yamaji Shivdev.

He also successfully led the Battle of Udgir which weakened the Nizam of Hyderabad.[2] He won the fort of Daulatabad.

The news of Ahmad Shah Abdali's march towards Delhi and the subsequent death of Dattaji Scindia at the battle of Burari Ghat had arrived. Therefore, Sadashivrao was called back from Udgir to Partur where the Council of war was held. It was decided that Sadashivrao would go north to resist the Afghans.

Third Battle of Panipat

The Third Battle of Panipat took place on 14 January 1761 at Panipat between a northern expeditionary force of the Maratha Empire and invading forces of the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali, supported by two Indian allies—the Rohilla Afghans of the Doab, and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh. The battle is considered one of the largest and most eventful fought in the 18th century.

In January 1760, news reached the prime minister Nanasaheb Peshwa that Ahmad Shah Durrani better known as Ahmad Shah Abdālī had invaded and captured the Punjab region.

Abdali had formed an alliance against the Marathas with other Rohilla chieftains principally Najib-ul-Daula and the Nawab of Awadh Shuja-ud-Daula. Abdali recruited Afghans displaced by the war.

Nanasaheb Peshwa was then at the zenith of his power, having defeated the Nizam at Udgir. He chose Sadashivrao to lead the Maratha army to Delhi. Unlike Malharrao Holkar and Raghunathrao, both of whom had deep knowledge of northern India, Sadashivrao was unfamiliar with the personages and politics of the region. This was to prove costly,[3] as he mishandled the regional kings and failed to form alliances with them. The main reason for the failure of the Marathas was that they went to war without good allies.

An army of between 55,000 was gathered and started its northward journey from Patdur (modern Partur) on 14 March 1760. It was accompanied by roughly 200,000 non-combatants including family members and a large number of pilgrims desirous of making pilgrimages to Hindu holy sites in northern India as they felt safe in the presence of the army. The Maratha forces of Holkar and Scindia joined the army on the way.

Sadashiv Rao was responsible for successfully adjusting the hit-and-run tactics used by the Maratha cavalry as these tactics were ill-suited for the western-style heavy artillery and infantry that he had learnt from the French. These changes had resulted in several victories for the army such as in Udgir. However, some of the Maratha generals (like Holkar) were not ready to adopt the new strategy completely and pointed out that the new units of artillery and infantry were not compatible with the other forces in the army and that the generals were not adequately trained on the deployment of the new units. Despite the reservations of his generals and a shortage of time and money, Bhau formed a unit consisting of 10,000 infantry and 50 artillery pieces.

Holkar and Scindia tried to persuade Bhau to strike diplomatic ties with Maharaja Suraj Mal, Jat Raja of Bharatpur and the Rajputs, Sikhs, Shuja-ud-Daula and Muslim leaders in north India. However, the Rajputs refused to support the Marathas citing unjust tribute from Rajputana and interference in the internal and political matters of Rajputana. Therefore, the Rajputs wanted to keep the Marathas away from at least the Rajputana. In 1748, the Marathas had interfered in succession of Jaipur kingdom trying to install the younger son as the king in place of the eldest son but the Maratha army under Malharrao Holkar had been checked by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1749.

Therefore, both Holkar and Scindia knew Maharaja Suraj Mal's strength and realised that an alliance with him was essential to win the coming war with Abdali. Despite the fact that Suraj Mal had killed Holkar's son in a battle, Scindia requested Suraj Mal to come to Agra to meet Sadashivrao Bhau for a greater cause though Suraj Mal did not trust Bhau. Both Holkar and Scindia gave their word of honour to Suraj Mal for his personal safety while persuading him to come to the Bhau's camp. Suraj Mal agreed to join the Maratha forces to defeat the foreign invader from Afghanistan.

Previous victories with artillery had made Bhau overconfident. Bhau was a man of strong character. He did not seek cooperation of the Jat and Rajput kings while planning for the war with Abdali but rather planned to punish them later to try to subjugate them. This led to their non-co-operation and an acute shortage of supplies. He did not heed the sound advice of Suraj Mal, who held power around Delhi and Agra, to leave the civilians at Agra and take only soldiers to the battlefield though there was a severe shortage of food and other supplies. This proved fatal on the fateful day of the final battle as the food finished and the starved soldiers and horses could not fight properly and a desperate Bhau had to order an attack. The Sarvakhap Panchayats which included Jats also supported the Marathas.

The overbearing attitude of the Bhau when he met the regional kings at Agra worsened the matters. The Bhau failed to forge an alliance with the Jats though they held sway on the food supplies around Delhi. In fact, Bhau decided to arrest Suraj Mal but Holkar and Scindia, who had given their word of honour to Suraj Mal while persuading him to come to the Bhau's camp, tipped off Suraj Mal at night and he left just after midnight. Bhau sent his men after him in the morning but Raja Suraj Mal and his men had reached the safety of Ballabhgarh fort by then and Bhau's men returned empty-handed.

Bhau also spurned the offer from the Sikhs for alliance though his commanders tried to persuade him. Therefore, he did not get any supplies from Punjab. Thus, inability to anticipate the food supplies of his army and inability to forge alliances was major cause of defeat in the Battle of Panipat.

The slow-moving Maratha camp finally reached Delhi on 1 August 1760, and took the city the next day in a battle in which artillery units were crucial in destroying the fortifications of Durrani's forces. However, Bhau found only a little supplies in Delhi for his forces.

The supplies from the region immediately around west and south of Delhi had dried up as Bhau had antagonised the regional rulers. Therefore, Bhau moved about 110 km north of Delhi to Karnal (which is further north of Panipat) and captured the fortified village of Kunjpura about 10 km northeast of Karnal on the west bank of Yamuna river with a blitzkrieg offensive that demolished the fort's ramparts with artillery shelling and an attack of cavalry and musketeer units. The entire garrison of Durrani was killed. Durrani had earlier crossed the Yamuna river and was on its east bank. The river was swollen in flood and could not be crossed. Durrani watched helplessly from the east bank of the river and could do nothing to save his garrison and the Kunjpura fort on the west bank of the river. The Marathas achieved a rather easy victory at Kunjpura, although there was a substantial Afghan army posted there. Some of Abadali's best generals were killed. Ahmad Shah was encamped on the left bank of the Yamuna River, which was swollen by rains, and was powerless to aid the garrison.

However, the supplies that Bhau got at Kunjpura lasted only a few weeks as there was a large number of non-combatants in his camp.

The massacre of the Kunjpura garrison, within sight of the Durrani camp, exasperated Durrani to such an extent that he ordered crossing of the river at all costs.[4] Ahmed Shah and his allies on 17 October 1760, broke up from Shahdara, marching north. Taking a calculated risk, Abdali daringly plunged into the river, followed by his bodyguards and troops. Between 23 and 25 October 1760 they were able to cross at Baghpat, (a small town midway between Delhi and Panipat on the east bank of Yamuna), as a man from the village, in exchange for money, showed Abdali a way through Yamuna, from where the river could be crossed[5]unopposed by the Marathas who were still preoccupied with the sacking of Kunjpura.

After the Marathas failed to prevent Abdali's forces from crossing the Yamuna River, they set up defensive works in the ground near Panipat, thereby blocking his access back to Afghanistan, just as his forces blocked their access back towards Delhi. However, on the afternoon of 26 October Ahmad Shah's advance guard reached Samalkha, about halfway between Sonipat and Panipat, where they encountered the vanguard of the Marathas. A fierce skirmish ensued, in which the Afghans lost 1000 men killed and wounded but drove the Marathas back to their main body, which kept retreating slowly for several days. This led to the partial encirclement of the Maratha army. In skirmishes that followed, Govind Pant Bundele, with 10,000 light cavalry who weren't formally trained soldiers, was on a foraging mission with about 500 men to gather supplies. They were surprised by an Afghan force near Meerut, and in the ensuing fight Bundele was killed.[6] This was followed by the loss of another 2,000 Maratha soldiers who were delivering the army's payroll from Delhi. This completed the encirclement, as Ahmad Shah had cut off the Maratha army's supply lines.[7]

With supplies and stores dwindling, tensions rose in the Maratha camp as the mercenaries in their army were complaining about not being paid. Initially the Marathas moved in almost 150 pieces of modern long-range, French-made artillery. With a range of several kilometres, these guns were some of the best of the time. The Marathas' plan was to lure the Afghan army to confront them while they had close artillery support.[8]

By November 1760, Durrani, managed to have 45,000 soldiers to block Maratha passage to the south towards Delhi. Durrani thereafter gradually isolated the Marathas financially and cut off their meagre supplies from their base in Delhi. This eventually turned into a two-month-long siege led by Abdali against the Marathas in the town of Panipat. During the siege both sides tried to cut off the other's supplies. At this the Afghans were considerably more effective, so that by the end of November 1760 they had cut off almost all food supplies into the besieged Maratha camp (which had about 1,00,000 non-combatants). According to all the chronicles of the time, food in the Maratha camp ran out by late December or early January and cattle died by the thousands. Reports of soldiers dying of starvation began to be heard in early January. Durrani had noted the huge number of non-combatants following Bhau's army, and ordered an attack on their camp, slaughtering large numbers of civilians and soldiers' families. The resulting casualties and refugees fleeing to the Maratha camp caused overcrowding, supply shortages and shook the morale of Bhau's army, forcing him to turn his attention to safely transporting the civilians to Pune. In January 1761, Bhausaheb faced famine and was blocked reinforcement due to Durrani's control of key transportation routes.[9]

On 13 January 1761, the Maratha chiefs begged their commander, Sadashiv Rao Bhau, to be allowed to die in battle than perish by starvation. The next day the Marathas left their camp before dawn and marched south towards the Afghan camp in a desperate attempt to break the siege. The two armies came face-to-face around 8:00 a.m. on 14 January 1761, the Makar Sankranti day, and the battle raged until evening.

Finally the Marathas, who were on the verge of starvation, made a bold effort to break the blockade and issued forth to battle. The attack on Durrani was fierce and his wazir was found sitting on the ground eating mud and telling his fleeing soldiers that Kabul is far off. The battle was in the favour of Marathas till about 2 pm, when a stray bullet hit Vishwasrao and Durrani managed to throw in ten thousand troops who had fled the battlefield along with fresh 500 slave troops that guarded him. Bhausaheb was surrounded along with Jankoji Scindia and Ibrahim Gardi, while Malhar Rao Holkar managed to slip away. Fighting to the last man, Bhausaheb perished in battle.

Sadashivrao Bhau along with Ibrahim Khan Gardi had planned and were executing a battle strategy to pulverise the enemy formations with cannon fire and not to employ his cavalry until the Afghans were thoroughly softened up. With the Afghans now broken, he would move camp in a defensive formation towards Delhi, where they were assured supplies. But some Maratha generals overacted while some left battlefield leaving their defences open resulting in the defeat of the Marathas.

Durrani was taken unaware by the early morning attack, and decided to counter-attack during daylight. Durrani faced heavy initial losses. A stray bullet hit Vishwasrao, Bhau's nephew and heir to Nanasaheb Peshwa and he died on the spot. Bhau departed the battlefield to visit the corpse and plunged into the Afghan army, Vishwas rao's death had a devastating effect on the morale of his troops. Durrani attacked to take advantage of the confusion and weakness of Bhau's forces. Bhau counter-attacked but ultimately the army was defeated and any remaining civilians were massacred.[10]

Jats Join Bhau

G.C. Dwivedi[11] writes... Right from the start the Maratha commander attempted to win over allies. He wrote, though in vain, to the various Hindu and Muslim chiefs, seeking their help in banishing the invader.64 The Sarva Khap Panchayat of the upper Doab, however, responded to his call.65

From his camp south of the Bangaga river (20 miles south of Agra) Bhau wrote to Suraj Mal entreating him to expeditiously unite with his forces. The Raja, however, suspected treachery and hence hesitated to visit the Maratha camp till the Holkar and the Scinde furnished personaloaths and solemn assurances concernmg1iIS safety. On 30th June, 1760, the Holkar conducted the Jat King (at the head of 8 to 10 thousand troops) and Imad to Bhau. Bhau, in person, advanced two miles to honourably welcome his only as also an important ally (Suraj Mal). The renewed pledges followed, Bhau taking the Yamuna's water in his hands as a solemn proof of his alliance with the Jat Raja. The Wazir held a conference with Bhau through the mediation of Suraj Mal.66

61. SPD., XXI, 190. By way of its date, this letter merely refers to 19th Muharram, and not to the particular year. The mention of the name of Badan Singh along with that of Suraj Mal, herein would show that the above negotiations occurred in the former's lifetime i.e. before 9th June, 1756. But the fact that the Marathas continued to press Suraj Mal for money even after that date, goes against it. From the tone of the letter as well as Bhau's conduct, respecting the Jat conditions, it seems that the Bhau's arrival i.e. before 8th June, 1760 rather than after it, as SPD.'s, editor G.S. Sardesai guesses. The incorporation of Badan Singh's name appears here due to the slip of its writer.

[p.210]: When asked for his advice, Suraj Mal emphasized "caution and reflection in conducting the war" against a mighty and clever enemy like the Abdali. He proposed that the ladies, the heavy equipage, big guns and such other things, which were of little use in the present struggle, should be despatched to Jhansi, Gwalior or anyone of his "four iron like forts". The line of supplies should be kept safe and open. The provisions, he ensured, could be procured from the Jat country. The Jat veteran disapproved of pitched contest. Instead, he stressed that unencumbered cavalry should constantly engage the enemy in irregular warfare. In other words the allies should stick to their traditional and tested guerilla system. The astute Jat went on that strong detachments should be sent towards the Afghan homelands. This would not only cut off the enemies supplies but also create a diversion and thus force his Indian allies to desert the Abdali. Perplexed by this strategem as also by the rainy season, the invader would go back and his Afghan henchmen would be brought to their knees, so calculated the Jat Raja. Malharrao Holkar, by far the most experienced Maratha general, concurred with this sagacious advice. However, young Bhau despite being a complete stranger to the north and its people, preferred the new mode of warfare, namely, to engage the enemy in pitched contest through infantry tactics. He, therefore, slighted this wise counsel. Both Suraj Mal and the Holkar felt disgusted at his attitude.Though differences over the plan of campaign did not lead to open rift, some coolness arose between Suraj Mal and Bhau and whatever enthusiasm the former had developed for the Maratha side was affected at the very beginning.67

The facade of unity was however, maintained between the two. Bhau accompanied by Suraj Mal inspected the Yamuna near Agra on 14th July, 1760. Finding it unfordable, the earlier plan to cross the river and then effect a junction with Govind Ballal was now dropped. Two to three thousand reckless Jat soldiers still crossed the flooding Yamuna, but no Maratha ventured the same and the Jats were cut off from the rest of the armies. Bhau now decided to capture the Capital and he moved on to Mathura on 16th July. He asked the Jat Raja to help him in "conquering and settling" De1hi.68 From Mathura he detached a strong force to Delhi

67. Imad, 273-276. However, its assertion that Bhau humiliated Suraj Mal at Agra does not appear to be correct for the simple reason that in view of his pressing needs he could not afford to alienate his only ally at that stage. Qanungo, Jats, 125ff; Tarikh-i-Ibrahim Khan (in Elliot, VIII, 275) claims that Bhau on his own endorsed the Jat plan but eventually discarded at the behest of Vishwasrao. This is incorrect. [p.211]: under the Holkar and Scinde guided by Suraj Mal and the Wazir. The city captured and soon (22nd July, 1760) it passed into the hands of the Wazir. The Fort was then put to siege. This was defended, though, inadequately by Yaqub Ali Khan, a relation of the Afghan Wazir. On getting the promise of safe exit he evacuated and handed over the fort on 1st August, 1760.69 Ali Muhammad Khan who wrote only about a year later, adds that the disheartened commandant (Yaqub Ali Khan) decided to make peace and came out to take "a strong pledge", through the Wazir and Suraj Mal. The latter's order got established inside the fort. Bhau "had farfetched ideas in his mind .... He did away with the (Jat) bandobast and appointed his own men there". The Wazir (backed by the Jat Raja) represented to the Maratha commander that as he himself was capable of protecting the fort, he (Bhau) should remove his own men. But Bhau was keen for personal control of the Capital and he spurned this appeal.70

In order to win Shuja over to his side, Bhau had been in touch with that chief, promising him the Wizarat.71 On the other side, he had apparently also assured the current holder of that office, Imad, of his re-installation at Delhi.72 Otherwise, the Wazir would not have confederated and marched with the Marathas upto Delhi. Bhau, however, concealed from his allies his secret promises to Shuja.73 It was only on 1st August, 1760 that the reality dawned them (Jat King and Imad). On that day, Shuja who was encamped across the Yamuna sent a letter to Bhau through Devi Dutta. Referring to the Maratha proposal, he pointed out that if among others he (Shuja) was recognised the Wazir and the Marathas agreed to return to the Deccan, he would persuade the Abdali to go back.

Suraj Mal's Withdrawal From Bhau's Camp

G.C. Dwivedi[12] writes... This embassy could not remain a secret. The thought of his prospective overthrow "displeased" power hungry Imad and his patron and both of them marched away to their camp at Tughlaqabad the same day. Delhi Chronicle adds that next day (i.e. 2nd August) the Marathas "rode out to remove (their) anger."74 This entry (in the above work) has been mainly relied upon by J.N. Sarkar and H.R. Gupta to establish that Suraj Mal

[p.212]: abandoned the Marathas on 2nd or 3rd August.75 That right now he finally departed to Ballamgarh has not been specified even by the above authority. The above scholars supplement their version with such sources76 (including SPD, XXI, 190, SPD, XXVII 258) which do not specifically place the Jat return under any of the suggested dates. On the contrary, certain hints in most of them suggest a later date, but this discrepancy has been somehow left un-explained.

The available sources need to be critically examined to ascertain the account and date of Suraj Mal's withdrawal. At the outset it is to be noted that overwhelming evidence of the nearly contemporary as well as important later works, the Sakhas and strong local tradition link his presence with such well-known events, which occurred after 2nd or 3rd August. Of the scores of the Marathi newsletters, only one (written from Bhau's camp) refers to Suraj Mal's departure, though only briefly and a little ambiguously too. It tells us that Suraj Mal and Imad got annoyed with, and left the Marathas and Mahipatrao Chitnis, Gangoba Tatya and Ramji Anand "have gone to bring them back". It merely refers to September, 1760, but contains no exact date of that month. Significantly, it does speak of Naro Shankar having been appointed the governor of Delhi77-an event which took place on 12th August, 1760.78 We have another fragmentary letter, written about 16th October, 1760, from Bhau's camp near Kunjpura. It makes the significant disclosure that Suraj Mal then was at Ballamgarh and that the Bharatpur troops under the command of his son(?) were shortly due to join Bhau. This letter also expresses the Maratha conviction, "The Jat is ours" and that there was no fear of supplies being obstructed on the Agra Mathura route.79

An entry of 24th September (1760), in Delhi Chronicle, whose contents are supported by Mirat-i-Ahmadi (a work written only eight months after Panipat) throws a good deal of light on our present issue. We are told that in order to assure themselves that Suraj Mal would not rejoin the Marathas, Ahmad Shah Abdali and Shuja sent robes of honour for that chief (at Ballamgarh) and sought intended assurances.80 These

76. Of all the authorities quoted by these scholars, only Tarikh-i-Muzaffari (wr. in 1800) is not acessible to us. We, however, presume that had it contained their dates, K.R. Qanungo, who has used it, must have referred to it while contradicting (Jats, 138) Delhi Chronicle. He, however, follows Bhau Bakhar to place the Jat departure somewhere between 25th September to 25th October. This is equally doubtful.

[p.213]: references belie Bhau Bakhar's claim that Suraj Mal left Bhau just before Bhau's departure for Kunjpura81 (i. e. in October, 1760) and also that of a popular Sakha which even makes the Jat go up to Kunjpura.82 In addition, they make an important hint about the period that had intervened since the Jat's return. Apparently, the above gesture of the Abdali emanated from his apprehension lest the Maratha efforts to placate the Jat should bear fruit. That it was not totally unfounded is borne out by Bhau's letter of 18th September. Therein he assures Govind Ballal that he could seek assistance from the Jat contingent (at Shikohabad) for threatening the homelands of the Abdali's Afghan allies.83 We know that Suraj Mal had returned annoyed. And Bhau could express such a conviction which suggests a comparative improvement in his relations with Suraj Mal around the middle of September. This leaves an impression that a reasonable period had elapsed since the Jat withdrawal which enabled the Marathas to re-open dialogue with the displeased Suraj Mal and that too in a manner as to cause concern to the Abdali. This, in turn, leads us to look further back, more appropriately to August, 1760, for the intended date, as is also suggested by a number of important sources.

Mir Ghulam Ali Azad (who wrote roughly two years later) relied upon the testimony of the Maratha negotiator with Shuja, who, being in the same camp, had the unique opportunity to know the actual facts. He places the Jat withdrawal after Bhau-Shuja negotiations and the appointment of Naro Shankar to the Capital's governorship (i e. 12th August, 1760).84 Tankh-i-Ibrahim Khan85 and Siyar accept this in toto, though the latter attributes the Jat departure primarily to that chiefs shock over Bhau's removal of the silver ceiling of the Diwan-i-Khas (6th August).86 So far as we are able to infer, the well-circumstanced eye-witness, Kashi Raj87 and Mirat-i-Ahmadi88 also place that event impliedly well after the ceiling episode. Ghulam Ali, whose informant was Rao Radha Kishan, a trusted follower of the Jat Raja says that the latter left following Bhau's exorbitant demand for money and his suspicious watch over the Jat Raja.89 As regards Shah Alam Nama,

[p.214]: although it does not connect the Jat alienation with any specific event, it all the same tends to put it quite a few days after the capture of the Delhi fort.90 Memoires des Jats also supports the inference that can be drawn from the above analysis. According to it, Suraj Mal came back when Bhau first thought (c. 17th August 1760)91 of proceeding northward (apparently to Kunjpura).92 All that the Bakhar and persistent tradition suggest is not correct but both these also agree with Suraj Mal still being with Bhau at that time. Thus, varied, weighty and overwhelming evidence leads us to place Suraj Mal's withdrawal from the Maratha camp sometime in the middle of August, 1760 rather than under the alleged date of the Delhi Chronicle. xx

91. The First clear mention of Bhau's resolve to go to Kunjpura is found in a letter of 2nd September, 1760. See Rajwade, I, 237. It is implied that the plan had been maturing in his mind for some time. Significantly we find him ordering Govind Ballal as early as 17th August, 1760, to send immediately 500 bullocks, which were needed for dragging the baggage, See Rajwade, I, 231. This would show that Bhau began to toy with Kunjpura project right from this time.

Third Battle of Panipat

In January 1760, news reached the prime minister Nanasaheb Peshwa that Ahmad Shah Durrani had invaded and captured the Punjab region.

Abdali had formed an alliance against the Marathas with other Rohilla chieftains principally Najib-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daula. All the Muslims in north India including Shuja-ud-Daula (Nawab of Awadh) were persuaded by Abdali and Najib to join the Afghans in the name of religion and to save Islam. Abdali recruited Afghans displaced by the war. Prince Vijay Singh of Jodhpur and Kachawa Prince Madho Singh of Amber also formed an alliance with Abdali but did not join him with their forces.

Unlike Malharrao Holkar and Raghunathrao, both of whom had deep knowledge of northern India, Sadashivrao Bhau was unfamiliar with the personages and politics of the region. This was to prove costly, as he mishandled the regional kings and failed to form alliances with them. The main reason for the failure of the Marathas was that they went to war without good allies.

An army of between 45,000–60,000 was gathered and started its northward journey from Patdur on 14 March 1760, It was accompanied by roughly 200,000 non-combatants including family members and a large number of pilgrims desirous of making pilgrimages to Hindu holy sites in northern India as they felt safe in the presence of the army. The Maratha forces of Holkar and Scindia joined the army on the way.

Holkar and Scindia tried to persuade Bhausaheb to strike diplomatic ties with Maharaja Suraj Mal of [[Bharatpur and the Rajputs, Sikhs, Shuja-ud-Daula and Muslim leaders in north India. However, the Rajputs refused to support the Marathas and instead, supported Abdali as the Marathas used to collect unjust tribute from Rajputana and had interfered a lot in the internal and political matters of Rajputana.

Therefore, both Holkar and Scindia knew Suraj Mal's strength and realised that an alliance with him was essential to win the coming war with Abdali. Despite the fact that Suraj Mal had killed Holkar's son in a battle,Scindia requested Suraj Mal to come to Agra to meet Sadashivrao Bhau for a greater cause though Suraj Mal did not trust Bhau. Both Holkar and Scindia gave their word of honour to Suraj Mal for his personal safety while persuading him to come to the Bhau's camp. Suraj Mal agreed to join the Maratha forces to defeat the foreign invader from Afghanistan.

Bhau's traits led to defeat in Panipat

Previous victories with artillery had made Bhau overconfident. Bhau was a man of strong, rather overconfident and overbearing, character. He did not seek cooperation of the Jat and Rajput kings while planning for the war with Abdali but rather planned to punish them later to try to subjugate them. This led to their non-cooperation and an acute shortage of supplies. He did not heed the sound advice of Maharaja Suraj Mal, who held power around Delhi and Agra, to leave the civilians at Agra and Bharatpur and take only soldiers to the battlefield, though there was a severe shortage of food and other supplies. This proved fatal on the fateful day of the final battle as the food finished and the starved soldiers and horses could not fight properly and a desperate Bhau had to order an attack. Bhau conspired to arrest Suraj Mal, who, after knowing this fact, secretly left Panipat.

At this the Afghans were considerably more effective, so that by the end of November 1760 they had cut off almost all food supplies into the besieged Maratha camp (which had about 250,000 to 300,000, most of whom were non-combatants). In January 1761, Bhausaheb faced famine and was blocked reinforcement due to Durrani's control of key transportation routes.

The battle was in the favour of Marathas till about 2 pm in the afternoon, when a stray bullet hit Vishwasrao and Durrani managed to throw in ten thousand troops who had fled the battlefield along with fresh 500 slave troops that guarded him. Bhausaheb was surrounded along with Jankoji Scindia and Ibrahim Gardi, while Malhar Rao Holkar managed to slip away.[13]

Death

There are different views of historians about Bhau's death.

One of the view is that ....Bhau, on seeing the demise of his beloved Vishwasrao, Bhausaheb came down from his elephant, climbed on a horse and plunged into the enemy lines, without realising the consequences. Seeing his empty howdah, his troops thought that he had fallen and that they were leaderless and caused confusion. However, Bhau didn't leave the battlefield and was killed.[14] His headless body was found in the heap of dead bodies three days after the battle. It was identified by the Maratha Vakil who were with the camp of left Marathas with Kashiraj Pandit, the wazir of Shuja Ud Daula. Bhau's body was cremated with all rituals. The next day, his head was found, which was kept hidden by an Afghan soldier. It was cremated and the ashes taken for visarjan to Kashi (Vishwas Patil, Kashiraj Pandit bakhar).

Bhau survived and led his secret life at Sanghi in Haryana

Most historians believe that Bhau perished in the battle but since his dead body was never found, a news had spread all over north India that Bhau perhaps survived and led his secret life elsewhere.

The research about death of Bhau conducted by historians like Swami Omanand, Nihal Singh Arya, Pratap Singh Shastri, Tryambak Shankar Shejwalkar, Mahipal Arya etc leads to believe that Sadashiv Rao Bhau did not die but escaped from the Third Battle of Panipat fighting with the Abdali army. He reached Sanghi village in Rohtak district of Haryana and lived there as a saint for many years.

Following paras by Mahipal Arya in hindi prove that Sadashiv Rao Bhau survived in Third Battle of Panipat and led his secret life at Sanghi in Haryana. The places like Bhaunath Samadhi, Bhau Ka Dera, Bidasa Mela, Mahalwal at Sanghi village in Rohtak district of Haryana are strong historical evidence in this favour that he lived here as a saint.
