Sahiwal (Hindi: साहिवाल, Urdu: ساہیوال) (formerly known as Montgomery), is a city in Punjab province, Pakistan. This city was a small village on the Karachi-Lahore railway line during 1865 when it was named Montgomery after Sir Robert Montgomery, then Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab. Sahiwal is approximately 180 km from the major city Lahore.

Origin

It was given its current name during 1966 after the Sahi clan of Kharal Jats who were the inhabitants of this area.

According to 1911 census, the following were the principal Muslim Jat clans in Montgomery District (Sahiwal District)[1]:

Arar (1,800), Bhadro (638), Bhatti (1,978), Chadhar (2,283), Chauhan (517), Dhakku (673), Dhudhi (582), Hans (964), Jakhar (676), Johiya (979), Kalsan (576), Khokhar (4,137), Kharal (735), Khichi (1,307), Mahar (1,225), Malil (1,633), Nonari (2,448), Sahu (1,178) and, Sial (3,709)

History

The Sahiwal District has been settled from the pre-historical era. Harappa is an archaeological site, about 35 km (22 mi) west of Sahiwal, that was built approximately 2600 BCE. The area was part of South Asian empires and in crossroads of migrations and invasions from Central Asia.

About 18 miles southwest of Sahiwal is Harappa, an ancient city, one of the oldest urban sites of Harappan or Indus Civilization in South Asia. About 28 miles (45 km) west of Sahiwal, at Kamalia, is the site of a Malli city captured by Alexander the Great in 325 B.C. Pop. (1998) city, 207,388. The people of Sahiwal are known as Sahiwalians. Sahis had their first settlement at the place called Yaadgar-e-Sahiwal. When the development was started during British rule in this area during 1865, Sahis moved to Chak No.60-61/G.D. Rai Haji Ali Sher Sahi is a major person amongst the Sahis in this region.


सहू गोत्र की एक छोटी सी सेना थी, जिसमें 80 घुड़सवार थे। सहू गोत्र के प्रमुख गढ़ हैं – धानसिया, दुरजाना, भाड़ंग (चुरू)[2]


भाड़ंग (चुरू) में इनके किले के खंडहर अभी भी मौजूद हैं। कहते है जब यह किला बनाया गया तब एक सारण गोत्र के जाट की बली दी गई थी। इस पर सारण और सहू लोगों में लड़ाई हुई जिसमें सारण विजई हुये। तब से सहू लोग गाँव छोडकर इधर-उधर चले गए। इनमे से कुछ बीबीपुर (जींद), मदनहेड़ी (हिसार) व रानीला (भिवानी) में बस गए। कुछ परिवार उत्तरप्रदेश के मेरठ जिले में आबाद हुये। कुछ मुसलमान बन गए जो अब शहीवाल पाकिस्तान में आबाद हैं। कुछ सिक्ख और बिश्नोई भी बन गए। [3]
