Sitamarhi (सीतामढ़ी) is a city and the district in the Mithila region of Bihar, India and is a part of the Tirhut Division. Sitamarhi is believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama’s consort Sita.

History

Sitamarhi is considered by many to be the birthplace of Sita, the main character of the epic Ramayana; a temple dedicated to Sita is located at Punaura Dham Sitamarhi.[[1]A rock-cut sanctuary from the great Mauryan period is found near Sitamarhi.[2]

In 1875, the Sitamarhi sub-district was created within the Muzaffarpur district. Sitamarhi was detached from the Muzaffarpur district and became a separate district on 11 December 1972. It is situated in the northern part of Bihar. The district headquarters is located in Dumra, five kilometres south of Sita temple.

Lakhandei River

The Lakhandei River is a river in southern Nepal and in the state of Bihar in India. It is a main tributary of the Bagmati River. In Nepal, the river basin lies in the Sarlahi District, and the river originates in the Sivalik Hills. The river enters India in the Sitamarhi district of Bihar, and flows through the town of Sitamarhi. It then enters the Muzaffarpur district, and joins the Bagmati at Katra (within the Muzaffarpur district). Before joining baghmati river split in two parts one part join baghmati while another one remain open & known as kali khadai near khangura village.[3]

Tourism

Places associated with the great Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata are of great religious value for the people of India. Sitamarhi, believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama’s consort Devi Sita, is one such place that has become a frequently visited pilgrimage destination. Located in the Sitamarhi District of Bihar in East India, the town is well-known for an array of temples and religious sites. Because of an increasing number of pilgrims taking interest in the religious tours to the town, it has attained popularity comparable to the tourist places like Ayodhya, believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama.

Major tourist sites

  • Janaki Temple: About 1.5 kms. Off the railway station, this is the birth place of Sita. Janaki-Kund is adjacent to the south of the temple.
  • Janaki Temple, Punaura: This is about 5 kms. west of Sitamarhi. This place also claims the honour of being the birth place of Sita.
  • Deokuli (or Dhekuli): It is 19 kms. west of Sitamarhi town. An ancient Shiva temple is situated here. A big fair takes place every year on the eve of Shivaratri. Legends have it that Draupadi, the wife of five Pandavas was born here. Now it lies in Sheohar district, carved out of Sitamarhi in 1994.
  • Haleshwar Sthan: This is 3 kms. north-west of Sitamarhi. As the myth goes, King Videha had founded a temple of Lord shiva on the occasion of Putra Yeshti Yajna. His temple was named as Haleshwarnath temple.
  • Panth-Pakar: It is 8 kms. north-east of Sitamarhi. It is said that after her marriage, Sita was carried in a palanquin to Ayodhya by this route. An old Banyan tree is still standing here under which she is said to have rested for a while.
  • Bagahi Math: Some 7 kms. north-west of Sitamarhi, in Bagahi village, there is a big Hindu monastery which contains 108 rooms. This is a famous place for worship and performing Yajna.
  • Pupri: There is a famous Baba Nageshwarnath (Lord Shiva) temple here. It is said that Lord Shiva had himself appeared as Nageshwar nath Mahadeo.
  • Goraul Sharif: It is situated some 26 kms. from Sitamarhi town. This is a very sacred place for Muslims, after Biharsharif and Phulwarisharif in Bihar.

सीतामढ़ी

सीतामढ़ी (AS, p.969) : प्राचीन जनश्रुति में सीतामढ़ी को जनकनंदिनी सीता की जन्मस्थली माना जाता है. यह ग्राम लखनदेई नदी के तट पर अवस्थित है. सीतामढ़ी से एक मील पर पुनउड़ा नाम के गाँव के पास एक पक्का सरोवर तथा मंदिर स्थित है. कहते हैं कि सीता का जन्म इसी स्थान पर हुआ था. [4]

सीतामढ़ी परिचय

सीतामढ़ी भारत के मिथिला का प्रमुख शहर है, जो पौराणिक आख्यानों में सीता की जन्मस्थली के रूप में उल्लिखित है। त्रेतायुगीन आख्यानों में दर्ज यह हिन्दू तीर्थ-स्थल बिहार के प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक है। सीता के जन्म के कारण इस नगर का नाम पहले सीतामड़ई, फिर सीतामही और बाद में सीतामढ़ी पड़ा। यह शहर लक्षमना (वर्तमान में लखनदेई) नदी के तट पर अवस्थित है। रामायण काल में यह मिथिला राज्य का एक महत्वपूर्ण अंग था। 1908 ईस्वी में यह मुज़फ़्फ़रपुर ज़िला का हिस्सा बना। स्वतंत्रता के पश्चात् 11 दिसम्बर 1972 को इसे स्वतंत्र ज़िला का दर्जा प्राप्त हुआ। वर्तमान समय में यह तिरहुत कमिश्नरी के अंतर्गत बिहार राज्य का एक ज़िला मुख्यालय और प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थल है।

पौराणिक कथा: महाराज निमि के वंश में उत्पन्न हृस्वरोमा के पुत्र राजा सीरध्वज जनक के समय में राज्य में अकाल पड़ा। वर्षा के निमित्त यज्ञ का निश्चय करके राजा स्वर्ण के हल से यज्ञभूमि जोत रहे थे। भूमि में हलाग्र लगने पर वहाँ से एक ज्योतिर्मयी कन्या प्रगट हुई। हलाग्र सीर लगने से उत्पन्न होने के कारण उनका नाम सीता पड़ा और उन्हीं के नाम पर इस स्थान का नाम सीतामढ़ी पड़ा।

नेपाल की पशुपतिनाथ की यात्रा करके लौटते समय सीतामढ़ी जनकपुर की यात्रा सुगम रहती है। यहाँ मुख्य मंदिर श्रीसीता जी का है। उसी घेरे में श्रीराम, लक्ष्मण, शिव तथा हनुमान जी के भी मंदिर हैं। श्रीसीता जी का आविर्भाव स्थल उर्विजा कुंड मंदिर के दक्षिण में है।

अन्य दर्शनीय स्थल

जानकी मंदिर— सीतामढ़ी रेलवे स्टेशन से डेढ़ कि.मी. की दूरी पर बने जानकी मंदिर में स्थापित भगवान श्रीराम, देवी सीता और लक्ष्मण की मूर्तियाँ है। यह सीतामढ़ी नगर के पश्चिमी छोर पर स्थित है।

जनकपुर— सीतामढ़ी से लगभग 35 कि.मी. पूर्व राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 104 से भारत-नेपाल की सीमा पर भिट्ठामोड़ से जनकपुर जाया जा सकता है। यह सीमा खुली है तथा यातायात की अच्छी सुविधा है इसलिए राजा जनक की नगरी तक यात्रा करना आसान है। यह वही स्थान है जहां राजा जनक के द्वारा आयोजित स्वयंवर में शिव के धनुष को तोड़कर भगवान राम ने माता सीता के साथ विवाह किया था।

पुनौरा— यह स्थान पौराणिक काल में पुंडरिक ऋषि के आश्रम के रूप में विख्यात था। कुछ लोगों का मानमा है कि सीतामढ़ी से 5 कि.मी. पश्चिम स्थित पुनौरा में ही देवी सीता का जन्म हुआ था।

हलेश्वर स्थान— सीतामढ़ी से 3 कि.मी. उत्तर पश्चिम में इस स्थान पर राजा जनक ने पुत्रेष्टि यज्ञ के पश्चात् भगवान शिव का मंदिर बनवाया था जो हलेश्वर स्थान के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।

उर्बीजा कुंड— सीतामढ़ी नगर के पश्चिमी छोर पर उर्बीजा कुंड है। सीतामढ़ी रेलवे स्टेशन से डेढ़ कि.मी. की दूरी पर स्थित यह स्थल हिंदू धर्म में विश्वास रखने वालों के लिए अति पवित्र है।

पंथ पाकड़— सीतामढ़ी से 8 कि.मी. उत्तर-पश्चिम में बहुत पुराना पाकड़ का एक पेड़ है जिसे रामायण काल का माना जाता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि देवी सीता को जनकपुर से अयोध्या ले जाने के समय उन्हें पालकी से उतार कर इस वृक्ष के नीचे विश्राम कराया गया था।

कैसे पहुँचे: रक्सौल-दरभंगा रेलवे लाइन पर सीतामढ़ी स्टेशन है। स्टेशन से यह मंदिर एक मील दूर है। यह स्थान बिहार राज्य के लगभग सभी स्थानों से रेल व बस मार्ग द्वारा जुड़ा हुआ है।
