Somagiri (सोमगिरि) is a mountain mentioned in Mahabharata and Ramayana. It is located in Uttarakuru and associated with Aurora Borealis - sometimes referred to as polar lights (aurora polaris), northern lights (aurora borealis), or southern lights (aurora australis), is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic).

History

Somagiri (सोमगिरि).—A mountain. This mountain ought to be thought of every morning and evening. (Mahābhārata Śānti Parva, Chapter 165, Verse 33).

सोमगिरि

सोमगिरि (AS, p.989): उत्तरकुरु या मेरु प्रदेश का स्वर्णिम प्रभा से मंडित एक पर्वत जिसका उल्लेख वाल्मीकि रामायण के किष्किन्धा कांड में है (देखें उत्तरकुरु, मेरु). इस उल्लेख से ऐसा जान पड़ता है कि इस पर्वत को मेरुप्रभा (Aurora Borealis) नामक प्रकृति के अद्भुत दृश्य से संबंधित माना जाता था. यह दृश्य उत्तर मेरु प्रदेश में आज भी सामान्य रूप से देखा जाता है.
