Suvastu (सुवास्तु) is a place name mentioned by Panini under Suvastvadi (सुवास्त्वादि) (4.2.77) group. [1] Suvastu (सुवास्तु) is also mentioned in Mahabharata in the genealogy of Danavas.

Identification

Alexander Cunningham[6] writes On leaving Utakhanda Hwen Thsang travelled about 600 li, or 100 miles, towards the north, to U-chang-na, or Udyana, which was situated on the river Su-po-fa-su-tu, the Subhavastu and Suvastu of Sanskrit, the Suastus of Arrian, and the Swat or Suat river of the present day.

History

V. S. Agrawala[7] writes that Panini mentions ganas headed by Suvastu (Suvāstu) (IV.2.77).

In Mahabharata

Suvastu (सुवास्तु) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.61.24), (1.67), also mentioned as River Suvastu (सुवास्तु) in verse (VI.10.24).


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Mahabharata Book I Chapter 61 gives the Genealogy of the Danavas, Asuras, Kauravas, Pandavas, Gandharvas, Apsaras, Rakshasas....Suvastu (सुवास्तु) is mentioned in verse (I.61.24)...."The first of Danavas, the heroic Hara, who humbled the pride of all foes became on earth the famous and fortunate Suvastu." [8]


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. River Suvastu is mentioned in verse (VI.10.24).[9]
