Dr.Ram Kanwar Rana

Dr. Ram Kanwar Rana is a retired scientist and Ex-HOD of Dept of Plant Breeding, CCS HAU Hisar, Haryana. He was born in Village Pakasma, District Rohtak, Haryana on April 20, 1948 in a farmer family. His father was Sh. Sultan Singh and mother was Smt. Kesar Devi. He did his primary, middle and matriculation from his village school. He was a brilliant student, stood first in every class and his teachers liked him very much. After passing matriculation in 1965, he joined Govt College Rohtak. He passed his B.Sc (Biology) in 1969.

  • MSc (Genetics, 1971), PhD(Genetics, 1984), College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Dept. of Genetics, Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar.
  • MPhil(Plant Breeding, 1979), University of Cambridge, UK under Commonwealth fellowship plan.

Service

He joined as research assistant in Dept. of Plant Breeding,CCSHAU Hisar in 1971, and rose to the position of Senior Wheat Breeder and Professor and Head, Dept. of Plant Breeding.

Development of Varieties

He contributed in development of high yielding wheat varieties which became very popular at farmers' field, and brought Green revolution in the northwestern plain zone of the country. Varieties are: WH147, WH157, WH283, WH291, WH416, WH542, WH711, WH896, WH912, WH1105. The wheat team, was judged as the 'Best Interdisciplinary Team' in wheat improvement and was awarded gold medal in 1997 by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Govt. of India, New Delhi. Resultantly, the CCS HAU Hisar, was also awarded as the 'Best Research Institute' in the country. He was also honoured with Dr. Ram Dhan Singh Memorial award by Chief Minister of Haryana, in 2007.

Post Retirement

After retirement from service on April 30, 2008, he joined as technical advisor (wheat) in National Seeds Corporation, Govt. of India, Pusa, New Delhi, for the year 2012-13.

Other achievements

  • He established a trust in the name of Rao Bahadur Dr. Ram Dhan Singh, a pioneer plant breeder of International fame who developed high yielding varieties of cereals which brought green revolution in north western plain of Indian Subcontinent.
  • He is a member of academic committee of Maharaja Surajmal Memorial Education Society, Janakpuri, New Delhi.
  • He is a member of Ch. Chhaju Ram Education Society, Hisar.
  • He is a member of Ch. Chhotu Ram Kisan Welfare Society, Rohtak.
  • He is a member of Jat Biographical Society, New Delhi.
  • He is President of Village Welfare Society, Pakasma, Rohtak.
