Venu (वेणु) is name of a place mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi under Madhvadi (मध्वादि) (4.2.86) group. [2]

History

It is believed that Pilibhit was ruled by an ancient king named Mayurdhwaj or Moredhwaj or King Venu, who was a great devotee of lord Krishna and a loyal friend of Arjuna, whose name and geography of his kingdom, can be traced in the epic Mahabharata. Local tradition connects them with the mythical Raja Vena.[3]

Venu River

The Vala clan is found in the state of Gujarat in India. They claim to be the earliest settlers in Saurashtra, and are descendents of Shiladitya, the Valabhi ruler of Gujarat. After the overthrow of Valabhi, the Valas settled in the south western Saurashtra, which is known as Valak, after the clan. The Vala were overthrown by the Gohils, and are now found as landholders. A few live in villages near the town of Mahuva, in a village Nanivavdi near the town Ranpur, and in Kadvasan in Kodinar area and also in a village of Khadol near the town Dhandhuka. Some twelve villages where Valas are located are along Venu river near Jam Jodhpur and some more twelve villages near Valank in Talaja area in Bhavnagar district.

In Mahabharata

Venu (वेणू) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.48.2).

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 48 describes Kings who presented tributes to Yudhishthira. Kings came from area covered with Kichaka Venu (bamboo) forests. Venu]] (वेणू) is included in verse (II.48.2). [4]....They that dwell by the side of the river Sailoda flowing between the mountains of Meru and Mandara and enjoy the delicious shade of topes of the Kichaka Venu (bamboo) viz., the Khashas, Ekasanas, the Arhas, the Pradaras, the Dirghavenus, the Paradas, the Kulindas, the Tanganas, and the other Tanganas, brought as tribute heaps of gold

चन्द्रवंशी सम्राट् वेणु

दलीप सिंह अहलावत[5] ने लिखा है....ब्रह्मा जी के आठवीं पीढी में चन्द्रवंशी सम्राट् ययाति हुए। उनके 5 पुत्र - यदु, तुर्वसु, पुरु, अनु और द्रुह्यु हुए। सबसे बड़े पुत्र यदु थे जिनके 4 पुत्र सहस्रजित, क्रोष्टु (करोक्षत्री) और नहुष हुए। सहस्रजित के पुत्र शतजित के तीन पुत्र हैहय, वेणु और हय हुए। उस हय के वंशज या सन्तान अहीर नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुई। यदु के पुत्र क्रोष्टु (करोक्षत्री) की वंशावली में श्रीकृष्ण जी हुये। अहीर केवल यदुवंशज हय की ही सन्तान हैं जबकि जाट ययाति के पांचों पुत्रों के वंशज हैं।
