Karalia (करालिया)[1] Karal (कराल) Kharal (खराल) is Jat gotra.[2]

Origin

They descended from nagavanshi mahapurusha Karala (कराल).

H.A. Rose[3] provides us the following genealogy as given by the Mirasi at Pandndwala in the Chiniot Tahsil of the Jhang District : —

History

Rajatarangini[4] tells us that in the history of Kashmir Godhara's son Suvarna, who reigned after him, was a liberal prince ; he gave away gold to beggars, and caused a canal which, he called Suvarna-mani to be dug at Karala (कराल).

In Epics

Aswamedha Parva, Mahabharata/Book 14 Chapter 8 mentions about Karala as protectors of gold mines of Kuvera as under:

"Samvarta said, "There is a peak named Munjaban on the summits of the Himalaya mountains, where the adorable Lord of Uma (Mahadeva) is constantly engaged in austere devotional exercises. ...And, O foremost of conquerors, on all sides of that mountain, there exist mines of gold, resplendent as the rays of the sun. And O king, the attendants of Kuvera, desirous of doing good to him, protect these mines of gold from intruders, with uplifted arms. Hie thee thither, and appease that adorable god who is known by the names of ....Hariyaksha, Vardak, Vamana, Shiva, etc. This is made clear in shloka 13 :
कपर्दिने करालाय हर्यक्ष्णे वरदाय
तर्यक्ष्णे पूष्णॊ दन्तभिदे वामनाय शिवाय च ।।13 ।।

The Mahabharata Book 9: Chapter 44, Shalya Parva Kisari Mohan Ganguli, tr. 1883-1896 mentions about the Gods who came to the ceremony for investing Kartikeya with the status of generalissimo. Karal has been mentioned along with other Gods as under in shloka 56:

अजॊदरॊ गजशिराः सकन्धाक्षः शतलॊचनः
जवाला जिह्वः करालश च सितकेशॊ जटी हरिः ।।56 ।।

Skanda Purana mentions that there are Twenty-eight types of hells. Karala is mentioned at 19th order. Each of the latter hell is more horrific than the former. Sinners have to undergo unbearable pain and sufferings in the hell.
