The Siva-Parvati-Daxa episode is an enchanting anecdote from the domain of Indian mythology equally interesting for the caravansrais, the holy and the temporal, the patrician and the plebeian. Mukerji's treatment of the theory may possess some grains of truth, but we take it, as a whole, rather, with a grain of salt. Reading the theory between lines evidently indicates certain cold facts which probably did not catch the attention of or were possibly avoided inadvertently by its erstwhile critics. Its purpose was little short of tracing the origin of Jats. It was used as an effective tool of propaganda in favour of Vaishnavism during the Medieval age when the masses, for want of scientific outlook and inquiry, easily succumbed to such whimsical myths and were taken in by such pious frauds. The success of Vaishnavism depended much on the denunciation of Saivism. The theory amply bears out the veracity of this assertion. Obviously, it purports, as its reading warrants, to create a psychosis against the devotees (Jats) of Lord Siva and, for that matter, denounces the republican tribes (ganas), the forefathers of the Jats, as desecrators of the yajna (sacrifice) arranged and officiated at by Daxa.

It was perhaps during this very age that Lord Siva was made to wear awkward and dreadful symbols, and was seated on a throne in cemetery or cremation grounds. This must be the stratagem employed by the Vaishnavites to stamp the feeling in popular psyche that he (Siva) has actually been the "Destroyer" and consequentl alienate the populace from him an his devotees.

The theory, undoubted I advocates the most honourable antiquity and remarkable bravery of the Jats that "may put the vipras to shame". Russell and Hira Lal, while giving their own version of the story, attribute to the Jats a statement that "in the beginning the Rajputs and the Jats were the only two races". In folk parlance truly goes the saying, "iron floats with wood" and this is vividly reflected in the sentence relied upon by the learned scholars. The exponents as well as the promotors of the theory must have acted upon this adage. In simple language it may be said that the two ethnologists tacitly admit the Rajputs to be as old as the Jats. This may also be an effort of the Vaishnavltes to ensure through the pen of these authorities as respectable an antiquity as that of Jats for their neo-marionette, who

bartered their sword with the ladle of the Vaishnav priests. But this is blatantly wrong, for, it is an open secret now that the Rajputs, as an ethnic group, are only the product of medieval times, whereas the Jats have been a pre-historic ruling race.

Mukerji's contention that there were no Jats in the Sivalak region at the time of this episode is also untenable. It appears that, as an ethno-geographer, he confined himself to only the medieval migrations and settlements of the Jats and did not take into consideration their earlier ones or even those of their ancestors, the Ayudhajivi people. We shall have occasion to show in the following pages that Sivas, identified with Sivis, the forefathers of Jats now better known as Shivkhande or Sheokhande, as Shivran or Sheoran; the Yakshus or Jakhus, the ancient ancestors or the present day Jakhar Jats; the Dasas or Dasyus perrsianised as-'Dahae, the progenitors of Dahia Jats; the Shigrus, the elers of Sigroa or Sigroha Jats of today; were the Rigvedic tribes that initially inhabited the Shivalak region, the home of Lord Siva .

D.N. Majumdar (1961: 96, 102, 110,44) informs that according to serologists the incidence of O in the Jats is 33.20%, of B 37.2%, the negative value of A-B 11.03 and their blood group frequencies are: 092, A68, B98, AB19, D/ra 1.1239 and X21.17010. W.R. Rishi has collected valuable comparative serological data of the Roma Gypsies of Europe and of the martial races of India and further establishes, on the strength of this evidence besides that of the similarity of their language and culture which though have undergone immense transformation under impact of foreign environs, that the Gypsies are the carriers of the blood of their Indian progenitors to the western world in the historical period (Appendix No 2).

The Soviet Scientists found to their surprise that Yakutian nationality, living in remote Siberia, have in their blood the "HLA - B 70" antigen, which is possessed only by the Hindus of north India (The Indian Express, Chandigarh, dt. Oct. 24,1988). We surmise that, as the name suggests, the Yakuts must be Yakhus = Jakhus or in Sanskrit Yakshus and in Prakrit Jakhus (Jakhar Jats), who lived in the Drishad and Sarasvati Doab in the Rigvedic period and who were expelled to northern countries after their defeat in the last battle of the Dasharajna wars

by the Bharatas and who, according to M.L. Bhargava, (who made an elaborate ethno-geographical study of the Sapta-Saindhava country of the Rigvedic period), gave their name as Yakhu (Oxus in Greek) and Yakshar (Jaxartes in Greek) to two rivers between the Aral sea and lake Balkhas (infra, ch. IX on migrations of Jats).

The findings of Dr. S. Prakash and Dr. K.K. Sharma (Anthrologist, 1973, Vol. XIX, No. 102) have added a new dimension which supports the anthropological studies of the Jats by Risley. They have, on the basis of their study of the shape of "Dental Arch in the Jats", proved that they resemble the "White" race. For some other scientific Studies of Jats, Ahirs, Gujars and Rajputs fuference may please be made to the closing pages of Chapter V.
