विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ...ऐरावतवर्ष (AS, p.115) एक पौराणिक स्थान का नाम है, जिसका उल्लेख महाभारत भीष्म पर्व में हुआ है- 'उत्तरेण तु श्रृंगस्य समुद्रान्ते जनाधिप, वर्षमैरावतं नाम तस्माच्छंगमत: परम्, न तत्र सूर्यस्तपति न जीर्यन्ते च मानवा:'(भीष्म पर्व महाभारत 8, 10-11) (दे. सृंगवान्)

Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 9 mentions names of the Varshas, mountains and all those that dwell on those mountains. Airavatavarsha (ऐरावतवर्ष) mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.9.10) [2]....On the north of Sringavat and up to the margin of the sea, O king, the Varsha called Airavat. And because this jewelled mountain is there, therefore is this Varsha superior to all. The sun giveth no heat there and men are not subject to decay. And the moon there, with the stars, becoming the only source of light, covereth (the firmament).
