PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF INDIA in exile - KABUL 1915-19

The provisional government of India in exile was established in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1915. Raja Bahadur Mahendra Pratap Singh of Mursan princely Hindu Jat state in Western UP was the President of this government. The Amir officially never gave support to it but the Afghans were sympathetic and ignored its activities. Mahmud Tarzi, a great Afghan political figure translated and reproduced the seditious material written by this government and distributed among Afghans. Afghanistan only had internal autonomy at this stage. Raja Bhadaur Mahendra Pratap Singh of Hathras met German, Turkish and other leaders across the world during this period in Kabul (see photo). In 1919 under pressure from British, the Afghan government officially closed the activities of the provisional government. Later that year when Amanullah Khan became the Amir he declared Afghanistan' independence from the British.
