Varkala

Varkala (वर्कला) is a commercial, industrial, and tourism centre in the Thiruvananthapuram district, situated in the Indian state of Kerala.
Location
It is the northern suburb of Trivandrum City. It is located 36 km north of Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), which is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Kerala, 15 km northwest of Attingal town and 28 km south of Kollam City.

History
Varkala is the only place in Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These Cenozoic sedimentary formation cliffs are a unique geological feature on the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and are known among geologists as Varkala Formation. The cliffs have been declared a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India for their protection, maintenance, promotion, and the enhancement of geotourism. There are numerous water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs. In 2015, the Ministry of Mines, the Government of India, and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) declared Varkala Cliffs a geo-heritage site.[1][2]
Varkala is also known for the 2,018-year-old Janardana Swami Temple, which is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India and is often referred to as Dakshin Kashi (Benares of the South).[3] The temple is located close to Papanasam beach, which is an Ayurveda treatment centre. The temple has an ancient bell removed from a shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel which sank near Varkala without causing any casualties.
Another major landmark in Varkala is the Sivagiri Mutt, established by the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru.
Legends: It is believed that a Pandyan King was instructed by Lord Brahma to build a temple at this very place to redeem him of his sins. Several other myths abound on the birth of Varkala. Another legend states that when a group of pilgrims approached Sage Narada and told him that they had sinned, Narada threw his valkalam (a loin cloth made from the bark of a tree) and it landed at this scenic village and hence, the place came to be known as Varkala. Narada told the pilgrims to pray for their redemption at Papanasam, which literally means redemption from sins.[4]

वर्कला (AS, p.835): त्रिवेन्द्रम शहर से 20 मील की दूरी पर उत्तर दिशा में स्थित है. यहाँ समुद्र तट पर एक पहाड़ी के ऊपर जनार्दन विष्णु का एक प्राचीन मंदिर है, जिसके विषय में किंवदंती है कि 16वीं शती में हालैंड के एक दुर्घटनाग्रस्त जलयान चालक ने आपत्ति से छुटकारा मिलने पर इस मंदिर को कृतज्ञतास्वरूप अपने जलयान के घंटे का दान दे दिया था। इस मंदिर के पुरोहित की प्रार्थना से अवरुद्ध वायु चलने लगी और समुद्र में फंसे हुए जलयान की यात्रा संभव हो सकी। [5]
वर्कला (केरल) परिचय
वरकला तिरुवनंतपुरम ज़िला, केरल की बाहरी सीमा पर स्थित है। यह एक शांत तथा नीरव बस्ती है। यहाँ पर्यटकों के आकर्षण के कई महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थल हैं। यहाँ पर्यटकों के आकर्षण के कई स्थल हैं, जैसे- मनोरम समुद्र तट, 2000 वर्ष पुराना विष्णु का एक प्राचीन मंदिर तथा शिवगिरी मठ, जो समुद्र तट से कुछ ही दूरी पर स्थित है।
स्थिति: वरकला तिरुवनंतपुरम शहर से 51 कि.मी. की दूरी पर उत्तर दिशा में तथा इसी ज़िले के कोल्लम से 37 कि.मी. की दूरी पर दक्षिण में स्थित है। त्रिवेन्द्रम से यह 20 कि.मी. की दूरी पर है।
प्राचीन मंदिर: यहाँ समुद्र तट पर एक पहाड़ी के ऊपर जनार्दन विष्णु का एक प्राचीन मंदिर है, जिसके विषय में किंवदंती है कि 16वीं शती में हालैंड के एक दुर्घटनाग्रस्त जलयान चालक ने आपत्ति से छुटकारा मिलने पर इस मंदिर को कृतज्ञतास्वरूप अपने जलयान के घंटे का दान दे दिया था। इस मंदिर के पुरोहित की प्रार्थना से अवरुद्ध वायु चलने लगी और समुद्र में फंसे हुए जलयान की यात्रा संभव हो सकी।
पर्यटन स्थल: यहाँ के समुद्री तट पर एक शांत रिजॉर्ट है, जहाँ खनिज जल का एक सोता है। यह माना जाता है कि इस तट के जल में डुबकी लगाने से शरीर तथा आत्मा की सारी अशुद्धियाँ दूर हो जाती है। इसलिए इसका नाम पापनाशम तट पड़ा है। यहाँ से थोड़ी दूर पर ही एक दो हज़ार वर्ष पुराना 'जनार्दनस्वामी मंदिर' चट्टान पर बना हुआ है। यहाँ से समुद्र तट के मनोहर दृश्यों का आनन्द लिया जा सकता है। इसके निकट ही एक प्रसिद्ध शिवगिरी मठ भी है, जो हिन्दू समाज सुधारक तथा दार्शनिक श्रीनारायण गुरु (1856-1928) द्वारा स्थापित किया गया था। गुरु जी की समाधि के दर्शन के लिए हर साल शिवगिरी तीर्थयात्रा के मौसम, 30 दिसम्बर से 1 जनवरी तक, में बड़ी संख्या में श्रद्धालु यहाँ आते हैं। नारायण गुरु ने जात-पात में बंटे यहाँ के समाज में 'एक जाति, एक धर्म तथा एक ईश्वर' के मत को चलाया था।
मान्यताओं के अनुसार ऐसा कहा जाता है कि वरकला के तट खनिज जल के स्रोत है, इसमें डुबकी लगाने से शरीर की सारी अशुद्धियाँ समाप्त हो जाती हैं और आध्यात्मिक सुकून मिलता है। यही वजह है कि इसका नाम 'पापनाशम तट' रखा गया है। इस तट पर नारियल के पेड़ों के बीच कई रिजार्ट व झोपड़ियां बनी हुईं हैं। वरकला तट मसाज के लिए भी काफ़ी मशहूर है। यहां पर काफ़ी अच्छे मसाज केंद्र बने हुए है। यहां की मसाज इतनी बढ़िया होती है कि कोई भी व्यक्ति अपनी साल भर की थकान मिटा सकता है। ये बड़ा ही दुर्लभ मसाज है, क्योंकि ये आयुर्वेदिक प्रकिया के द्वारा पारांपरिक तरीकों से होता है। साथ ही हस्तशिल्प अर्थात हाथों से बने गहने यहां काफ़ी मशहूर हैं।
