Purushwar (पुरुषवार) Paurushwar (पौरुषवार) is gotra of Jats. This gotra originated from Purushpur (पुरुषपुर), the ancient name of Peshawar (पेशावर) in Pakistan. [1] In ancient times the city was known as Purushapura (Sanskrit: पुरुशपुरा) when it was officially founded by the Kushans. Peshawar occupies a region that was dominated by various tribal groups of Aryan origin. The region was part of Gandhara, and had links to the Harappan civilization of the Indus river valley and to Bactria and Afghanistan. [2]
