Mātalī (मातली) or Matli (मातलि) was Charioteer of Indra who took Arjuna to the kingdom of gods. He is the originator of Matwa jat clan.

Aryaka is mentioned to have born in the race of Kauravya. Kauravya is born in the race of Airavata. Aryaka's son was named Chikura. Chikura was slain by a Suparna. Chikura's wife was the daughter of a Naga named Vamana. Chikura's son was named Sumukha. Matali, the charioteer of Deva king Indra chose Sumukha as his daughter Gunakesi's husband (5,103). Matali's son was Gomukha^{[1] [2]} Sakra sent down from heaven his car and his charioteer, named Matali, to aid the son of Dasharatha in his fight, and Rama went about and greeted it, and, mounting upon it, seemed to light the whole world with splendor. ^[3]

Place in Iran

Kal Matali place is situated in Hormozgan, Iran, its geographical coordinates are 27° 8' 4" North, 55° 47' 3" East and its original name (with diacritics) is Kal Matalī.

In Buddhist literature

In Buddhist literature Matali has been mentioned as notable Gandharva. Among the notable gandharvas are mentioned (in DN.20 and DN.32) Panāda, Opamañña, Naḷa, Cittasena, Rājā. Janesabha is probably the same as Janavasabha, a rebirth of King Bimbisāra of Magadha. Mātali the Gandharva is the charioteer for Śakra.

Śakra (Sanskrit) or Sakka (Pāli) (zh: 帝釋天尊) is a name of a deity mentioned in Vedic religion, Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism.

Matali cave is one of cave in the List of caves in Papua New Guinea.^[4]
