Anandapura (आनंदपुर) was one of Buddhist places visited by Xuanzang in 640 AD. Alexander Cunningham has identified Anandapura with Vadnagar (वडनगर) city in Mehsana district in the state of Gujarat.

आनंदपुर

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है ... आनंदपुर (AS, p.62): आनंदपुर गुजरात में स्थित एक ऐतिहासिक नगर है जिसका नाम अब आणंद कर दिया गया है। गुर्जर नरेश शीलादित्य सप्तम के अलिया ताभ्रदानपट्ट (767 ई.) में आनंदपुर का उल्लेख है। इस नगर में राजा का शिविर था जहां से यह शासन प्रचलित किया गया है। किंवदंती के अनुसार आनंदपुर सारस्वत (नागर) (p.63) ब्राह्मणों का मूल स्थान है। उनका कहना है कि उन्होंने ही देवनागरी लिपि का आविष्कार किया था।

7वीं शती ई.( 630-645 ई.) में जब युवानच्वांग भारत आया था तो आनंदपुर का प्रांत मालवा के उत्तर पश्चिम की ओर साबरमती के पश्चिम में स्थित था। यह मालवा राज्य के ही अधीन था। इसका दूसरा नाम वरनगर भी था। ऋग्वेद प्रातिशाख्य के रचयिता उव्वट ने अपने ग्रन्थ के प्रत्येक अध्याय के अंत में इति आनन्दपुर वास्तव्यं लिखा है। बहुत संभव है कि वह इसी नगर का निवासी रहा हो। नागर ब्राह्मण वरनगर के निवासी होने से ही नागर कहलाए।

Alexander Cunningham writes that Hwen Thsang places O.nan.to.pulo, or Anandapura, at 700 li, or 117 miles, to the north-west of Vallabhi This town has been identified by M. Viven de Saint- Martin with Barnagar, on the authority of the Kalpa

[p.494]: Sutra of the Jains ; but tile bearing is to the east of north, and the distance is 150 miles, or 900 li. Barnagar has already been mentioned as the Sanskrit Vadapura, or Barpur. The district was 2000 li, or 333 miles, in extent, and was a dependency of Malwa. This estimate of its size will be fully met by limiting its territory to the triangular tract lying between the mouth of the Banas river on the west, and the Sabarmati river on the east.
