Devendra Jhajharia

Devendra Jhajharia (देवेन्द्र झाझड़िया) is the only Indian to have won the gold at an ‘‘Olympic’’. He is the one-armed javelin thrower from Rajasthan. On September 21, 2004 he had hurled the javelin to a distance of 62.15 metres at the Paralympic Games in Athens, creating a world record. Before him, no Indian had won a medal at the competition. Devendra is a Class IV employee with the Indian Railways. He had lost his left hand in an accident.
Devendra Jhajharia was honoured by the Governor of Rajasthan on 10 June 2005 with the award of Maharana Pratap Puraskar, the highest award for games in Rajasthan. The award carries a cash of Rs 10000/-.
