Tuman (तुमान) is a village in Podi Uproda (now in Kartala) tahail in Korba district of Chhattisgarh. Tuman (तुमान) was the first capital of Kalingaraja, the founder of Kalachuri dynasty in Chhattisgarh. It has been mentioned as Tummana (तुम्माण) or Tumanaka (तुमाणक) in Kalachuri inscriptions. Around 1050 AD King Ratandev of this dynasty shifted capital of Kalchuri kingdom from Tumman to Ratanpur.

Tuman is a small village situated at 10 km away from Katghora, which is 30 km away from district headquarter in the north-west direction. [4]

Tuman - Perched at a distance of 10 kilometres from Katghora, Tuman is a tiny town that welcomes tourists to perceive the ancient history of the Haihaya dynasty. Located 30 km away from district headquarter in the northwest direction, the town was the capital of kings of the Haihaya dynasty. The main attraction of Tuman village is the ancient Shiv Mandir, believed to be built by King Ratnadeva I during the reign of Kalachuri in 11th century A.D, making it one of the interesting tourist places in Korba.[5]

Jat Gotras Namesake

  • Tamana (Jat clan) = Tummâna. Prithvidëva I is called the lord of Tummâna, mentioned in Koni Stone Inscription Of Prithvideva II - (Kalachuri) Year 900 (=1148 AD).(p.465)[8]
  • Tamana (Jat clan) = Tummâna (Country). Mentioned in Mallar stone inscription of Jajalladeva II (Kalachuri) year 919 (1167 AD). Tunamâna has already been shown to be identical with Tumân, 16 miles north-east of Ratanpur. [9] The ruins of capital of Kalacuris Tuman can be still seen in north-west of Laafaagadh Jamindari (Kota tahsil) in present Bilaspur district. [10] Lufa or Lapha town in in north of Pali town.

History

Tumanaka (तुमाणक) is mentioned in L.28 of Amoda Plates Of Prithvideva I (Kalachuri) Year 831 (=1079 AD).[11].....The object of the present inscription is to record the donation of the village Vasahâ (वसहा) in the Apara-mandala on the occasion of the construction of a chatushkikâ, or a hall resting on four pillars, of the temple of Vankësvara in Tummâna..... Tummâna, which was the first capital of the Kalachuris in Chhattisgarh, bas been satisfactorily identified with Tumân, 45 m north of Ratanpur.1 The present grant shows that Tummàna continued to receive royal attention even after the capital was shifted to Ratanpur. Line.28-29 state....— has given as a grant by (pouring) water on (the doneé's) hand, after washing both the resplendent feet of the holy Vankësvara and filling the hollow of his hand with water mixed with kusha, whole rice-grams and gold, on (the occasion of) the dedication of a hall resting on four pillars of (the temple of) the god, the holy Vankësvara (वङ्केश्वर), in Tumànaka (तुमाणक), on Sunday, the seventh tithi of the dark fortnight of Phàlguna.


Near 1000 AD prince Kalingaraja of Tripuri branch established his capital at Tamman and thus founded Ratanpur dynasty of Kalachuris. This branch of Kalachuris also called themselves Haihaiyavanshis. Around 1050 AD King Ratandev shifted capital of Kalchuri kingdom from Tumman to Ratanpur. Various Kings of this dynasty ruled over Dakshin-Koshala (the area now known as Chhattisgarh) for over 700 years from Ratanpur.


During 10-17th century South Kosal (Chhatisgarh) was ruled by Haihaya rulers with capital at Tripuri near Jabalpur. Raja Kalingaraja was from this dynasty whose capital was at Tuman. The ruins of capital Tuman can be still seen in north-west of Laafaagadh Jamindari (Kota tahsil) in present Bilaspur district. His son Ratan Singh founded Ratanpur which was capital of South Kosal for a long period. In 16th century Marathas defeated Raja Raghunath Singh, the last ruler of Ratanpur. [12]

Population

Tuman is a large village located in Kartala Tehsil of Korba district, Chhattisgarh with total 526 families residing. The Tuman village has population of 2281 of which 1136 are males while 1145 are females as per Population Census 2011. [13]
