Suhma (सुह्म) was an ancient state during the Late Vedic period on the eastern part of the Indian Subcontinent, which originated in the region of Bengal. This kingdom was mentioned in the epic Mahabharata along with its neighbouring kingdom Prasuhma.

1) Suhma (सुह्म).—A country famous in the Purāṇas. It is stated in Mahābhārata, Ādi Parva, Chapter 112, Verse 29, that Pāṇḍu had conquered this country which was situated on the Eastern part of Bhārata. Bhīmasena also conquered this country during his regional conquest of the east. (Mahābhārata Sabhā Parva, Chapter 30, Verse 16).

2) Suhma (सुह्म).—A country situated in the mountainous region of North India. It is mentioned in Mahābhārata, Sabhā Parva, Chapter 27, Verse 21, that Arjuna conquered this country during his regional conquest of the North. Source: Cologne Digital Sanskrit Dictionaries: The Purana Index

In Mahabharata

Suhma (सुह्म) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.24.20), (II.27.14), (II.27.23), (II.31.12),(VI.10.44),


Adi Parva, Mahabharata/Book I Chapter 98 the line of Vali was perpetuated. The rishi Dirghatama had five sons from King Bali's queen Sudeshna: Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Pundra and Suhma,


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 24 mentions countries subjugated by Arjuna that lay to the North. Suhma (सुह्म) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.24.20).[1].....Then Arjuna, that bull amongst the son of Pandu, at the head of all his troops, fiercely attacked the regions called Suhma and Chola. Then the son of Indra, endued with great prowess, after pressing them with great force, brought the Valhikas always difficult of being vanquished, under his sway.


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 27 mentions the countries subjugated by Bhimasena. Suhma (सुह्म) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.27.14). [2].....The mighty hero (Bhimasena) then, endued with abundant energy, vanquished in battle the Suhmas and the Prasuhmas. And winning them over to his side, the son of Kunti, possessed of great strength, marched against Magadha.


Suhma (सुह्म) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.27.23).[3].....And having vanquished Samudrasena and king Chandrasena and Tamralipta, and also the king of the Karvatas and the ruler of the Suhmas, as also the kings that dwelt on the sea-shore, that bull among the Bharatas then conquered all Mlechchha tribes.


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 31 mentions the Kshatriyas who brought tributes on Rajasuya sacrifice of Yudhisthira. Suhma (सुह्म) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.31.12).[4].....and the Dravidas and the Singhalas and the king of Kashmira, and king Kuntibhoja of great energy and king Suhmas,....


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. Suhma (सुह्म) Province is mentioned in Mahabharata (VI.10.44).[5]....the Videhakas, the Magadhas, the Suhmas, the Vijayas, the Angas, the Vangas, the Kalingas, the Yakrilalomans;

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[6] ने लेख किया है ...सुह्म (AS, p.982): 1. बंगाल के दक्षिणी समुद्र तट के प्रदेश का प्राचीन नाम (पाठांतर सुह्य). पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार राजा बलि के चतुर्थ पुत्र सुह्म के नाम पर यह जनपद प्रसिद्ध हुआ था. दंडी के दसकुमारचरित में ताम्रलिप्ति को सुह्म प्रदेश के अंतर्गत बतलाया गया है जिससे इस देश की स्थिति का ज्ञान होता है. ताम्रलिप्ति नगरी जिला मिदनापुर (बंगाल) में समुद्र तट के निकट स्थित थी. इसका अभिज्ञान वर्तमान तामलुक से किया गया है किंतु महाभारत सभापर्व 30,24-25 में ताम्रलिप्ति और सुह्म का अलग-अलग उल्लेख है--'समुद्रसेनं निर्जित्य चन्द्रसेनं च पार्थिवम्, ताम्रलिप्तं च राजानं कर्वटाधिपतिं तथा। सुह्मानामधिपं चैव ये च सागरवासिनः सर्वान् मलेच्छगणांश चैव विजिग्ये भरतर्षभः' फिर भी इस उल्लेख से सुह्म का बंगाल-सागर के निकट स्थित होना सिद्ध होता है. कालिदास ने भी रघुवंश में सुह्म का वांग के पश्चिम में उल्लेख किया है--'.....' रघुवंश 4,35. इसके आगे 4,36 में वांग का उल्लेख है. टीकाकार वल्लभ ने 'सुह्मैै:' पद की 'ब्रह्मदेशीयै: राजिभि:' टीका की है जो ठीक नहीं जान पड़ती. बुद्धचरित 21,13 में बुद्ध द्वारा सुह्म निवासियों के बीच अंगुलिमाल ब्राह्मण को विनीत किए जाने का उल्लेख है. यहां वे पाटलिपुत्र से चलकर अंगदेश होते हुए आए थे. धोयी कवि के पवनदूत (5,36) में भागीरथी को सुह्म में प्रवाहित माना है.

2. महाभारत सभापर्व 27,21 में अर्जुन की उत्तर दिशा की दिग्विजय यात्रा के सुह्म का उल्लेख इस प्रकार है--'अनम्राणां समुद्धर्तुस्तस्मात्सिन्धुरयादिव । आत्मा संरक्षितः सुह्मैर्वृत्तिं आश्रित्य वैतसीं ' चोल का अभीज्ञान चोलिस्तान से किया गया है जो वंक्षु नदी या आक्सस नदी के दक्षिण में स्थित है. चोलिस्तान से संबंधित होने के कारण सुह्म इसी के पार्श्ववर्ती प्रदेश में स्थित रहा होगा. बंगाल के समुद्र तट का भी एक नाम सुह्म साहित्य में मिलता है [p.983]: (देखे सुह्म) जो भारत की उत्तरी-पश्चिमी सीमा के परे स्थित इसी नाम के जनपद से अवश्य ही भिन्न है. महाभारत सभा पर्व 27,21 में सुह्म पाठ की शुद्धता अनिश्चित है.
