Merta City (मेड़ता सिटी) in Nagaur district is a truly Jatland of Rajasthan. Its ancient names are Medantaka (मेदन्तक) / Medantakapura (मेदन्तकपुर).

History

After Rao Duda ruler of Medata Rao Viramdev become ruler of Medata & Ajmer.His second son Rao Jaimal was very Brave. aimal defended Chitor against Akbar and ballads of his bravery are still sung in Rajasthan, Hariyana, UP, and Punjab. Chitoregarh Rana Udai Singh some difficult position left Chitorgarh fort and give a charge of Chitorgarh Rau Jaimal Medatiya Senapati of Chitore. मेड़ता की रचना करीब हजार पूर्व महाराजा मान्धाता ने मान्धातृपुर नाम से की थी. मेड़ता प्रथम मान्धातृपुर, मेदिनीपुर, मेड़न्तक, मेरूतक, महारेता, मीरता तथा अंतमें मेड़ता के नाम से मशहूर हुआ. 725-40 ई. के शासक नागभट्ट प्रथम की राजधानी मेड़ता थी. [1]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Merta City had a population of 40,252. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Merta City has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 48%. About 16% of the population is under 6 years of age. Merta City is a holy city for Hindus as it is the birth place of Meera bai the famous Devotee of Lord Krishna.
