Major Rajiv Kumar Joon was born on 5 December 1969 in village Garhi Kheddi (गढ़ी खेड़ी) of tahsil and district, Rohtak, Haryana. The eldest son of Shri Dharam Singh andSmt. Shanti Devi, he had four sisters and one brother. He lost his father at the age of 11 in 1980 and shouldered the responsibility of his family boldly. Rajiv was a brave and sincee boy from his childhood, he looked after the family affairs and continued his studies at the same time.

He passed his 10+2 from Sainik School Kunjpura in 1987. In June 1987 he joined the National Defence Academy at Khadakvasla and was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy on 8 June 1991 and was posted to 22 Grenadiers.

on 16 September 1994, he was leading a search operation for militants in the Pulwama of Jammu and Kashmir when his team came under heavy fire from the militants. He crawled forward to the militant hideout and lobbed hand grenades, killing a militant. Although he sustained serious injuries, he hesitated to be evacuated and killed another militant. Later, he succumbed to his injuries. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra and Shaurya Chakra.

June 3, 2016: Foundation stone of Jai Jawan Awas Yojna (JJAY), an initiative to provide affordable housing to serving and retired JCOs and Other Ranks, was laid by Manohar Lal Khattar, the Honourable Chief Minister of Haryana, at Bahadurgarh, Haryana today. General Dalbir Singh, Chief of Army Staff was the Guest of Honour during the event. Lieutenant General KJ Singh Western Army Commander was also present apart from large number of Veterans & Veer Naaris.

The project is being executed by Army Welfare Housing Organization and aims to provide low cost housing. This housing project has been named in the memory of Late Major Rajiv Kumar Joon, recipient of Ashok Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, who had attained martyrdom fighting militants in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir. On this occasion, his brother Paramjit Singh Joon was felicitated by the Chief Minister of Haryana.

The event was followed by an address of the Veterans Rally by the Chief Minister of Haryana and the COAS. Gen Dalbir Singh announced that the residential project at Bahadurgarh would be pitched at a very low cost for the benefit of JCOs and Other Ranks. He praised Late Major Rajiv Joon for setting a sterling example of bravery and sacrifice. Gen Dalbir Singh thanked the Haryana Chief Minister for all the assistance provided for the project and added that the Chief Minister had granted dispensation in construction which permitted construction of about 500 dwelling units instead of 400 planned earlier. COAS also brought out that a similar dwelling project was being planned at Karnal for which land has been promised by the Chief Minister.[1]

शहीद जून की जयंती पर 100 यूनिट रक्तदान - रोहतक, 5 दिसम्बर 2016 - भारतीय सेना के सर्वोच्च सम्मान अशोक चक्र एवं शौर्य चक्र विजेता शहीद मेजर राजीव कुमार जून की 47वीं जयंती गांव गद्दी खेड़ी में मनाई गई। शहीद मेजर राजीव कुमार जून राजकीय माध्यमिक विश्वविद्यालय में आयोजित कार्यक्रम में सेना के कर्नल विक्रम गिल ने मुख्यातिथि के रूप में शिरकत की। कार्यक्रम में हरयाणवी गायक राममेहर मैहला, रामकेश जीवनपुर वाला व हरकेश चावरिया ने अपनी प्रस्तुति से सबका मन मोह लिया। स्कूली बच्चों द्वारा सामूहिक एवं एकल गान व नृत्य प्रतियोगितायें आयोजित की गईं तो रक्तदान शिविर भी लगा जिसमें 100 यूनिट से अधिक रक्त एकत्र किया गया।

कार्यक्रम की शुरुआत में कर्नल सरताज व कैप्टन संदीप सिंह ने अपनी टीम के साथ शहीद मेजर राजीव कुमार जून को सलामी दी। कर्नल विक्रम गिल ने कहा कि हरियाणा की मिट्टी में वो वीर जवान पैदा होते हैं जिन पर पूरा देश गर्व करता है। 5 दिसम्बर 1969 को हरियाणा की मिट्टी में जन्म लेने वाले मेजर राजीव कुमार जून 16 सितम्बर 1994 को अनन्तनाग जिले में आतंकवादियों से भिड़ गए और कई आतंकवादियों को मार गिराने में सफल हुए।(दैनिक भास्कर दिनांक 6 दिसम्बर 2016)
