Hira Singh Chahar

Hira Singh Chahar (हीरासिंह चाहर) was a social reformer, folk-singer and freedom fighter from village Paharsar in Churu district in Rajasthan. He was born on 17 January 1901 in the family of Laxman Ram Chahar. He joined Arya Samaj at the age of fourteen and spread the doctrine of Arya Samaj in remote villages of Rajasthan. He started a campaign to remove social evils from the society through folk-songs. His poems played a wonderful role in awakening the Jats. He devoted all his life for the betterment of Jat community.
He strongly opposed the exploitation of farmers by the Jagirdars. He was expelled from Churu by Ganga Singh of Bikaner. He joined the freedom movement in Marwar under the leadership of Baldev Ram Mirdha and started working under the banner of Kisansabha. He organized a kisansabha in Dabra village on 13 March 1947. The jagirdar threatened that if Dabra kisansabha is organized, Hira Singh will not remain alive. Irrespective of threats the kisansabha started, the jagirdar created problems and there was a struggle between both in which Hira Singh was injured.
He died on 30 June 1993.
