Chahar (चाहर) Chahad (चाहड़) Char (चार) Chaharag (चहारग) is a gotra of Jats found in Rajasthan,Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in India. Chahar Jats are known for simplicity and honesty. Chahar Jats have been also awarded the title of Faujdar like Sinsinwar, Kuntal and Sogarwar Jats. The Muslim rulers awarded the title of Faujdar to people who had responsibility of protecting some territory. Chahars originated from Chola vansha rulers in south India.[1]
History of Chahars
Ramki Chahar has been very popular and brave name among Chahars. Ramki Chahar along with Raja Khemkaran of Sugreevgarh gave a very tough fight to the Muslim army.
Raja Chahar Deo ruled at the Narwar fort in Gwalior region at the end of 13th century. Coins of Chahar Deo are found in the region with "Asawar Sri Samant Deo" marked on one side and "King riding horse" on the other side. Raja Chahar Deo ruled Narwar till vikram samwat 1355. After the fall of his rule at Narwar his descendents moved to "Brij Bhumi" region of Uttar Pradesh. Other group of Chahar Jats moved to Matsya and Jangladesh regions of Rajasthan.
Chahar Jat Raja Maldeo, about six centuries ago, ruled at Sidhmukh in Jangladesh (Bikaner). Ghulam Badsah ruled Delhi at that time. The Muslim army while returning from Jaisalmer had a tough fight with Raja Maldeo. The chief of the Muslim army wanted to take away with him the daughter of Maldeo, Somadevi. In the war with Muslim army Maldeo was killed near the boarder of Sidhmukh. Remaining members of his family migrated to Jhunjhawati region.
Distribution in Uttar Pradesh
Presently large number of villages of Chahar Jats is found in Agra, Fatehabad and Kheragarh tehsils of Agra district. This area of Agra region is known as Chaharwati due to heavy population of Chahar Jats. There are 242 villages of Chahars in Chaharwati area in Chahar Khap in Agra district.[2] A large number of villages of Chahar Jats are also found in Muradabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
