Ratangarh (रतनगढ) is a town and tahsil of Churu district in Rajasthan, India. Ratangarh is famous for grand havelis with frescoes, which is specialty of the Shekhawati region. Ratangarh is also famous for its handicraft work. Its old name was Kolasar, which was converted to present name by Raja Surat Singh in name of his son Kunwar Ratan Singh in 1803.[1]

Demographics

As of 2001 Census India , Ratangarh had a population of 63,463. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Ratangarh has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 53%. In Ratangarh, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Geography

Ratangarh is located at 28.08|N|74.6|E[2]. It has an average elevation of 312 metres (1023 feet). It is midway between Jaipur and Bikaner on National Highway-11.

Ratangarh is situated in the Thar Desert. There are so many Temples in Ratangarh, That's why Ratangarh is called "Kashi" of Rajasthan. Ratangarh is not situated in planes but on the "Dhora's" (Big sand dunes). Even the colonies in town are named after these "Dhoras" like "Holi dhora".

History

तहसील की संस्कृति अति प्राचीन है | बीकानेर संग्रहालय में रखा हुआ रतनगढ़ क्षेत्र में प्राप्त 11 वीं सदी का प्रस्तर फलक (नृत्यलीला) एवम् संवत 1309 अंकित सती देवली जो गाँव हुडेरा में है इसके जीवन्त प्रमाण है | रतनगढ़ नगर की स्थापना संवत 1955 से 1970 (सन 1719 से 1913) को मध्य बीकनेर रियासत के तत्कालीन महाराज सुरतसिंहजी ने अपने पुत्र रतनसिंहजी के नाम पर की थी | इसके पहिले यहाँ कोलासरराजीया की ढाणीयाँ थी | मठ्ठाधीश शिवालय (16 वीं शताब्दी - कोलासर) साधुओं की बगीची, माता करणी मन्दिर के पिछाड़ी की सराफों की हवेली की आज भी कोलासरराजीयों की ढा़णी की सौगात के रुप में दो शताब्दियों के बाद भी मौजूद है | क्षेत्र की भाषा डिंगलयुक्त राजस्थानी है |[3]


रतनगढ़ संभाग भारत गणराज्य के राजस्थान प्रान्त के चूरु मन्डल का उपमन्डल है जिसमें रतनगढ़ व सुजानगढ़ तहसीले शामिल है| इसके उत्तर पूर्व में चूरु, उत्तर में सरदारशहर, दक्षिण में सुजानगढ (चूरु जिला) पश्चिम में श्री डूंगरगढ़ व दक्षिणपूर्व में फतेहपुर (लक्ष्मणगढ़) तहसील की सीमायें है|27.5 डिग्री उत्तर अक्षांस व 34.37 डिग्री पूर्व देशान्तर में राजस्थान के उत्तरपूर्व भाग में रतनगढ़ की स्थिति हसमुद्रतल से औसतन उँचाई 308 मीटर है| तहसील का कुल क्षेत्रफल 169976 हेक्टर है जिसमें कृषी वा चरागाह की भूमि प्रायः 150000 हेक्टर है| पठार के नाम पर बिरमसर की डूंगरी है| भूमि बालुकामय है| सन् 2007 को जनगणना सर्देक्षण के अनुसार तहसील की जनसंख्या एकमात्रनगर रतनगढ़ के 63463, मात्र कस्बे राजलदेसर की 22736, उपकस्बा पड़िहारा व 101 गाँवों की 157030 यानि कुल जनसंख्या 244330 थी| तहसीलके मूलनिवासी बहुत बड़ी तादाद में प्रवासी बन गये है जो उपरोक्त गणना में शामिल नही है|[4]

Notable persons

  • Kishna Ram Padgad - One and only Jat MLA from Ratangarh constituency who was born in village Khotri of Ratangarh tehsil. He won the assembly election in 1957 as an independent candidate. He was also elected Pradhan of Ratangarh tehsil for several terms.
  • Chunnilal Dhaka - A well known lawyer in the region.
  • Sukharam Bhari - Currently working as Assistant Commercial Manager in North-Western Railway, Jodhpur, born at Jata Bas in Ratangarh city.
  • Amit Dhaka - Jat IAS from Ratangarh, son of well known lawyer Late Shri Chunnilal Dhaka.

  • Chaudhari Surta Ram Sewda - A freedom fighter from Ratangarh who helped a lot in the campaign for spreading education. He gave his own land for starting a school and Chaudhari Buddhram Dudi got made a shade on this land to start a school.

  • Ch. Rupa Ram Maan - He was from Haryana and was in Railway Police Head Constable at Ratangarh. He left the job and founded Vidyarthi Bhawan at Sihagon Ki Chhatri in Ratangarh. Here he started educating farmer community boys. Initially his wife used to cook food for the boys. Vidyarthi Bhawan Ratangarh plays very important role in spreading education and reforms.
