Tetarwal (तेतरवाल)[1] Tetarval (तेतरवाल) Tittarwal (तीत्तरवाल)[2] Titarwal (तीतरवाल)[3] Titarwar (तीतरवार) Tatur (तातुर)[4][5] gotra Jats are found in Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh.

Origin

They are said to be descendants of Nagavanshi King Tittira (तित्तिर) of Mahabharata period. [6][7]

History

Ram Sarup Joon[8] writes that...about 70 Jat Gotras joined the Gujar force and started calling themselves Gujars. Titarwal is one of them.

Shalya Parva, Mahabharata/Book IX Chapter 44 gives the list of combatants who came to the ceremony for investing Kartikeya with the status of generalissimo. Shloka 81 names Viraja, along with Tittira and Dharan. [9]

Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 46 mentions in shloka 50 about Tittiras among the kings in the war under the leadership of Drupada along with Balhikas, Tittiras, Cholas and Pandya in south wing. [10]

H W Bellew considers Tatar proper belongs to a much earlier period, being mentioned in the Mahabharat as the Tittar, along with various tribes of Turk race.[11]
