Anjana (अंजना)[1] Anajana/Anjna (अंजना)/Anjana (आंजणा,आँजणा)[2][3] Anjne (अंजने) Anjane (आंजने)[4] Anjan (अंजन) Anjana Chaudhari is gotra of Jats found in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat. The Chaudharys of Gujarat are also known as Anjana. The gotras of many of the Chaudharys of Gujarat are similar to those of Jats of North India. [5]

Origin

They are descendants of Anjana Jata Shankara (अंजना जटाशंकर) son of Atisur Bhadra, the son of Jat King Virabhadra. They are Chandravanshi. [6]The descendants of Atisur Bhadra came to be known as Anjana or Anjilet and settled down in Malwa, Mewar, Marwar and Dhundhar.[7] They are branch of Chauhan.

Mention by Panini

Anjana (अंजन) is a term mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [8]

Añjanāgiri (अंजना गिरि) is name of Mountain mentioned by Panini. [9]

Añjīkūla (आञ्जीकूल), also Añjīkūla (अञ्जीकूल), Añjalikula (अञ्जलीकूल), Ajikūla (आजीकूल), is name of a Country mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi under Dhumadi (धूमादि) (4.2.127) group.[10]

Anjana (अञ्जन) is mentioned in Mahabharata (IX.44.100).

History

Ram Sarup Joon [11] writes that ... Anjana is a branch of Puru. People belonging to this gotra are found mostly in Shahpur, Mianwali and Jhelum (Punjab). Some people of this gotra are Sikhs also.

Anjana is mentioned as Toramana's wife Angjana, daughter of Vajrendra of the line of Ikshaku in Rajatarangini.[12]

Rajatarangini[13] writes that during the reign of Matrigupta in Kashmir, the son of Angjana, after he had performed the ceremonies for the salvation of the souls of his ancestors, with the waters of holy places, heard that a stranger had usurped the throne of his forefathers, and was ruling in Kashmira. This inflamed him so much as to make himself forget his grief for the death of his father. When the prince arrived at Kashmira, he learnt the state of the country ; and the ministers came to him, and were ready to revolt against Matrigupta. But he declined to countenance there re

[p.49]: rebellion. "I am eager",he said, "to destroy Vikramaditya, but I am not" angry with Matrigupta. For what is the use of harassing those who are weak and can not endure pain? there is glory in rooting out those who are strong. What can be more frail and feeble than the lotuses which envy the moon, and what propriety is there that such lotuses should be torn by elephants' tusks ? It is strange that one should show his valour on those who are not his equal ; he who is really great will not be angry with his inferiors." He turned his arms against Trigartta and conquered it, and commenced his march against Vikramaditya. But on his way he heard that Vikramaditya was dead. This news so much afflicted him, that he neither bathed nor ate nor slept that day but sighed and wept for his dead antagonist.

Erskine mentions three divisions among the Jats : [14]

  • (1) The asli or pure Jats with no Rajput ancestry;
  • (2) The joint Jat-Rajput stock; and
  • (3) The Anjana or those of different social rank,

Nainsi reports the existence Anjana Jat in a large number of the villages of Merta. In the caste-census of 1891, they are reported to have taken their caste title or nomenclature from their home-village. This statement makes sense of the evidence of the vagat. The Jat immigrants from Nagaur presumably derived their caste title from the name of the Village.[15]
