Siddhu (सिद्धु) Sidhu (सीधू) is a very ancient gotra. The ancestor of this gotra was Siddhu Barar. The gotra was named after him and came to be known as Siddhu. The people inhabitant of Sidhmukh mountain were called Sidhu (सीधू).[1] This is the largest clan and the Royal family of the former Patiala state belonged to this very clan.

History

Among his descendants Phul was a fortunate one, as his five sons founded five kingdoms. All of them together are called Phulkiyan states including Nabha, Patiala, Jind, Malot and Kapurthala. They call themselves Rajputs, but they do not know that the Bhatti Rajputs are just a branch of the Madrak Jat gotra.

They are mentioned in the Vishnu Purana. [2] The royal house of Patiala, ect. are from this clan. Brar, another clan has separated from Sindhus and so Brars are Sindhus.

Distribution in Punjab

According to B S DHillon,[3] the population of Sidhu in Patiala district is 138,000. This is the largest clan and the Royal family of the former Patiala state belonged to this very clan.

In Amritsar district the Sidhu population is 26,739. This clan around Atari and Bhakna villages holds 14 villages. [4]

In Ludhiana district the Sidhu population is 24,741. It is believed that this clan originally came from the Faridkot area of Punjab about 350 years ago and own a good many villages around the town of Jagraon.[5]

According to B S Dhillon the population of Sidhu clan in Jalandhar district is 2,250.[6]

In Firozpur district the Sidhu population is 207,000. [7]
